    Nope. Just dispassionate.

You are right, from a customer or a personal perspective. From a corporate perspective? Every dollar counts to them.
What Toyota DOES do, is they give dealers "X" amount of dollars every year for "goodwill" repairs that are not covered under warranty. For example, your transmission blows up 340 miles past your warranty. Or, your paint peeled on your hood six months after you bought the truck. It is not an insignificant amount either. Now, the challenge is, as a customer, being the recipient of that goodwill money. There are no rules (I've been told) and the dealers are very tight with it. So, a relationship with the dealer could be important as well as the hardship of your story. Just lost your job, wife left you, dog died, etc. Bot, Toyota does allow their dealers to offer goodwill on repairs.
Is this fair? No, but life is not fair either.
Your way is fair, but where do you draw the line? One year? Five years? Did the guy take it through an automatic car was every single day? Did the guy get in an accident and the body shop did a shit job on his paint? What about that guy who followed a gravel truck every day for two years and his truck is chipped to hell? Trust me, those people will also be demanding that their paint gets fixed too (because dickheads) and will be just as indignant and mad if they get refused. And, it's not so easy to determine why paint peels.
I guess Toyota could say "we only will repair if it peels around the rear window or at the fender/hood gap." What about that guy whose paint is peeling at the front door window?
Paint is not like a fuel pump or something that either works, or it don't.

Your window frame area looks a lot better than mine, and it looks like you did a good job with the touch up. But then I got to the second picture. That looks like it'll need a few bottles of the touch up paint.

really great points. From the corporate respective, they certainly think that for my ‘14 lol. Dealer allocation & budget is a whole topic I have a pretty green knowledge base of, but makes sense. I guess the old way that our elders used to do it (buying multiple/ all your cars from the same dealer) is really the best way to build that relationship with a local dealer.

Plus, beyond myself (and others on here) who baby the paint, polish a few times a year etc. etc. a paint chip isn’t nearly as big of a surprise after nearly a decade.

For those with newer trucks having the issue, I feel worse - got some great value out of my truck and at 110k miles I got a lot left. It’s funny, because thinking about it in a different viewpoint, if Toyota spend the $ to fix my car that’s nearly a decade old, it would be an incredible customer experience.

Oh well! We’ll see what happens, good to know we’ve done what we can, and I’ll be honest I still love the truck.

Now onto fixing the problem instead of just whining about it… a few options… will post at some point about about it

I have a 2023 OR in Ice Cap and if I would have done more research, I for sure would have went with a different color option.
Since ownership and learning of this issue I have been inspecting every inch of this truck every time I hand wash it…meh I feel it’s just a matter of time before it starts so I guess the 2024 trailhunter is in my future lol…..

Except those examples (accident, chipped paint from gravel) are not the issues here. The real issue is that Toyota issued a recall for numerous other vehicles covering 10+ years of 040 paint issues, but refuses to cover the Tacoma. These 3rd gen trucks all peeling in the same areas for at least three model years clearly identifies a manufacturer defect with this paint code and application.

I traded my 2016 in rather than continue to deal with peeling paint for another 10 years. I took a hit on the trade in value due to the paint problems. I went through the whole song and dance with corporate trying to get the truck repaired and was told to shove off. I would like to see some compensation for the reduced trade value, but doubt that will ever happen.

GEICO came through and covered it for me. They cut me a check minus my deductible. Pretty awesome

Agreed! It took a couple months, and I had to make two follow up calls, but they came through.
    Would recommend!

Let me say this and I'll probably copy and paste it and put it in the super white chipping thread.

    Preface- I love Tacoma's.

I had a brand new 2022 super white 4x4 V6 DC. After I put a deposit on it I learned about all the super white chipping problems. Tried to change my allocation and color, no luck. Told the salesman and he said if it ever starts even after 5 years bring it in and they will fix it. I said is this a dealer promise or a Toyota promise? He said dealer. I even got it IN WRITING that's how paranoid I was about it. Dealer seemed understanding.

Fast forward 8 months later. Truck is not abused. Waxed and washed often. No power washing. Starts chipping behind the rear window of the back doors. A 2022. With 10k miles on it. Take it to the dealer. Even with their paperwork they refuse to honor it. Goes all the way to Toyota corporate. They refuse to fix it and said maybe I can get one respray of that door and Toyota will only cover half of it after fighting them tooth and nail.

This truck is almost brand new and still under factory warranty. I'm telling you unless you got lucky get out of super white as soon as you can. It's happening even on newer trucks. I sold mine to carvana even with the chipping for more than I paid my black Tacoma gets in a couple weeks. Not every super white chips but why risk it and be left with a messed up paint job?

Toyota in general rules. Toyota of America fucking sucks. Almost like two different companies the way they treat their customers.

Already sold it don't care anymore. Learned my lesson. It's happening on newer trucks too.

Outside of excessive wear-n-tear or vandalism your paint would be covered by Toyota within the 3/36k warranty! It doesn’t make much sense to me as to why it would not have been a covered item no matter what “in writing” dealership paper you have. Can you post any pics of the chipping on your 2022?? I haven’t seen any past 2019 as there is I believe only 1 claim on a 2020 and no pics were uploaded for verification. Now that is not to say it isn’t happening and or that you’re not being factual whatsoever. I would never discount anyone’s complaints.

Toyota tried to say it was my fault at the dealer and corporate level, the dealer was lying to corporate and corporate was getting two different stories and corporate chose to side with the dealer at first and say it was my fault, it was not, dealer fought me on the warranty work, i only have one dealer within 4 hours so going to another one was an issue, dealer tried to blame me and say it was due to rock damage. it was not, also was chipping inside the hood area under the hood as well. Only pics I have since I just sold the truck deleted everything. These are on both rear doors of the double cab.

I’m sorry my friend for what you had to deal with, very much appreciate the photos, and wish you the very best with your new black truck!!
Makes a nervous owner as I didn’t know of the issue until after I bought my 2023 OR.

I agree. This doesn't make sense on Toyota's part. Clearly this should have been covered under the basic warranty. Unless @PanzerDivisionBlack was past his mileage. However, seeing his photos, It looks like a paint bonding issue that has primarily affected the 2016-2018 Tacoma's out of the Mexico plant. This is concerning seeing a 2022 with this issue being reported here for the first time. I would assume that their Tacoma was out of the Mexico plant as well? My 2020 was near the end of Tacoma's being produced out of the Texas plant before they were all moved to Mexico. Hopefully the paint doesn't peel on mine.

Yes Mexican Tacoma built in December 2021 and delivered January 2022. I think it's because my dealer kept telling corporate it was my fault when obviously it's chipping in the same area as everyone else's with no damage from me
