Consolidated Super White 040 Paint Issue/Failure Thread - With Toyota Corp. Update

Is this an issue based on where the vehicle is manufactured (MX vs. US)? My '17 was built in TX and I've experienced no paint issues as of yet.

 

Just for 3rd Gen? Not to say it can’t happen, but I haven’t heard of or seen this on a 2nd Gen.

Happened to mine on my 2017. Took it to the dealer and apparently there is a something Toyota is going to do for the Tacoma's in super white at the beginning of the year, he said I should get something in the mail early 2021 and contact to set-up an appointment.

 

Keep us in the loop if that happens.

 

Sure will, he made lots of big claims about they take trucks with paint issues in 040 white up to 1-3 weeks in the body shop while providing a rental. Protocol was to run high pressure washer on weak spots on the trucks to try and chip off as much paint as possible before they fix and warranty the fixed areas as well. Hope this mofo is right

 

Its been "in the process" for over a year now under "customer support program ZKG" and Tacomas have yet to be added to the official list. I've seen a few anecdotical cases of dealers applying it to Tacomas on good will, but nothing official from corporate on Tacomas. Not sure how they can justify a program for paint on some models and not others, unless they've been able to trace it to an application issue, but the support program literature says it is a degradation issue from sunlight.

FWIW, I have a White 2017 SR built in Texas with no paint issues.

 

2008 Super White peeling in several spots. I have also pointed out to others with super white where the have peel behind the edges of the rear bumper. And they definitely took better care of the paint then I have. Assuming I will be on my own to fix...

 

That's BS degradation from light. One of my worst spots on my 2017 isn't exposed to any sun under the hood.

Seems to be happening more to 2017 white Tacomas out of Mexico. It may impact later years as well, just not enough time has passed for it to be an issue yet.

Yup that sounds about right from what we've seen on here. Does your VIN start with a 3 or 5?

 

It's a 3 and I know that means its from baja. It's not a plant issue though. They have a customer support program that started a year and a half ago for a host of models painted from 2007-2018 with super white that are having the same paint failure. The tacoma is not on the list. But It includes camry, corolla, 4runners, avaolns and rav4's.

 

Mine did the under hood shit just like that, back doors are still good though. It was also peeling at the quarter panel edges near the front door.

 

I could see it fading or going to shit after 14 years. Mine was peeling within less than three years of manufacture date.
