I think Toyota is still trying to sort out an official fix.

My 14 has peeling paint under the hood on each fender, where the A pillar meets the fenders, and gas tank door. I reported it. I will probably fix this myself. No other places are peeling right now. I just got the truck too and didn't notice. Paint is fairly oxidized too and I plan on getting it professionally detailed this month.

    Seems like It's taking forever.

I would imagine that Toyota want's to make sure that they get it right the first time. Otherwise, you potentially could have the same issue from the re-paint.

My 14 just got a week or so ago. Didn't notice this at all at the dealership. Was more focused on the frame and drive. Touched up the small areas with paint pen. The front fenders, I'll probably have to tape everything off and spray paint those. That or hope and pray they add my truck to their list and wait.

    Just can't win.

Saw your other thread when you mentioned wrapping your truck and was hesitant to reply probably not wise as when it comes time to remove it’s probably going to take everything with it.

DYI fix it. Take your time, do it right. Several guides and examples of dyi 040 repair on the 2nd gen forum. My approach but luckily mine is limited to the window seal on the front doors only. I’m this close to being willing to bet the farm anything outside of the current window will ever receive repair or compensation.

    Enough for now
Just moved overseas and left my truck with my dad. He is pursuing the paint correction very aggressively. Has a dealer in TX that is going to diagnose it, and if approved the dealer has a paint and body shop ready to do the work. I'll post more updates as my truck moves through the process.

Took the plunge today. Prepped with chipping loose paint, steel wool, loads of alcohol, followed by Duplicolor Super White II. I'll finish off with Spray Max Clear Coat 2K on Monday when it comes in the mail.20240806_151234.jpg 20240810_101409.jpg 20240810_101246.jpg

Up until now the flakes have been relatively small, with a 3” strip on my door near the window being the biggest. Now, I have a baseball-sized patch on the roof that has peeled off in less than a month :(

Just finished painting my defects today. Sucks to hear man. I decided I'm not gonna wait for Toyota to maybe help me. I encourage you to do the same.

This was the reason I got rid of my ‘21. I’m not waiting months/years for Toyota to fix it. By then all the panels will be toast or they’ll fix one just for another to start flaking. Best thing that ever happened, got a ‘24 and couldn’t be happier

Not everyone can do that. Personally, I wouldn't do that even if I could. New Toyota scares me. Honestly,(knock on wood) it's taken almost 11 years and 123k miles for it to have paint come off in some places, luckily for me, none are visible. If I started having sheets of paint come off, I might consider getting rid of the truck. I see white Toyotas every day including Tacomas.

I literally just rotary polished my whole truck without issue

The problem is, a lot of people are having the issue in highly visible areas.

Also, we get it you don’t like the new truck. To each their own.

From what I observed the 2nd gen paint held up a little better, typically lasting 8ish years on average before issues. The 3rd gen’s are having issues in as little as 1-3 years.

To me it makes more sense for the 3rd gen owners to flip it as they stand to lose the most equity. Bigger loans, higher purchase price, bigger losses.

As the issue becomes more and more prevalent less people will be interested in 040 tacomas when compared to other colors. Less buyers = less value. Dealers offering less trade in value, because 040 has less interest, sits on the lot longer, higher cost of ownership, higher liability, etc.

For guys like you and I it’s not a big deal. I’ve already got my value out of my truck. My total cost of ownership is less than 250 a month including loan for the entirety of my vehicle ownership. Now that the truck is paid off that amount will continue to fall.

For guys who bought at 40, 45, 50+. It’s a harder pill to swallow.

Exactly, I got a pretty penny for my third gen that had only 20k miles on it. Had to get rid of it before the issue became very noticeable or my resale value would’ve likely plummeted

Now you can just wait years for them to address and fix everything with the 24 :)

Makes sense. I wouldn't have got the truck if I had known there were issues with the paint. I don't know if I'll have any further issues, I pray I won't. I'm not gonna let it keep me up at night. I see blue, red, and black 2nd Gens with absolutely terrible paint. Looks like someone took a blow torch to the roof and hood.

My frame, engine, and interior are well cared for. This engine is time proven and I have confidence I'll have it for many many years to come.

FWIW: If it helps, my 2014 with 134,000 on it is perfect.

NOTE: Just to be clear at the outset: This is not a "gloat" post! I have no signs of paint loss. That said, I wouldn't have bought one in this color if I had known about any of this. (I wanted a Spruce Mica) I'm baffled/intrigued about why random samples seem to escape this defect/scourge... even 10 years later. I haven't waxed it since I purchased it in 2021 either. It's not the most glossy paint job on the drivers' side rear fender behind the rear wheels, but there is no paint loss. The front fenders, hood, roof and doors are shiny, but the right rear fender I would call: "Semi-gloss White".... and even NuFinish, which usually helps anything, doesn't bring them back. Just a so-so paint job back there and the tailgate as well.

Hope this helps with current owners facing this issue.
