The 2.5 from a Camry isn't considered a truck motor and the 2.7 by design is, longer stroke motor. Before my 3.5 I had the 2.7 in my 12. I loved that motor. It had decent power, gas mileage was great and it idled like a a Swiss watch. There was no denying it's reliability and trusted that motor more then my current 3.5.

Consumer Reports is biased at best. Inept and unscientific to call it like I see it. All it takes it to read one of their reviews on something YOU personally know something about. It's easy to see their lack of scientific method, lack of objectivity and poor choices of scoring criteria. Their reviews on vehicles fail because they don't address what really matters to the buyer. I'd expect them to downgrade a Ferrari as impractical for a family and expensive to repair. Ya think?

I think with a few tweaks it would be a better base engine than the archaic 2.7. It would shave a few pounds off the nose of the truck and maybe add a few MPG to boot.

I'm not sure why people say I'm trolling the 3rd gen forum. I've driven an SR a used one with the 2.7 and found the truck to be very underwhelming for what it cost. The people that say I'm trolling are the same people that saying rear drum brakes are ok. I will end up buying a 3rd gen this year, but an SR version not a chance.

I was just going thru their 10 least reliable list and had a Camaro on there because they did not like the AC Vent location, small backseat, and limited visibility.

Well i mean the 2.7 makes 160hp and your 3.4 makes 190hp... not much of a difference.

Bed Mat and Go Pro. Toyota made it so good, doesn't need much mods. Don't like getting her dirty!!
CR has to be paid by the manufacturer for their reviews. How else could 3gen Ridgeline score so high? New RL sales are tanking here in Miami. I still have an 08 Ridgeline RTS, but my son is driving it now. That is a decent Truck. When looking for a replacement I didn’t even consider the ridgeline, as I didn’t feel any excitement for it. I bought a 3rd Gen Tacoma SR5 V6 2wd Double Cab 5’ Bed and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! The V6 AF6D1B1F-C653-46AD-A2B0-5792688B2100.jpg engine may be shared with other platforms, but the transmission, braking & ECT power are pure truck. The SR’s are nice too. It’s whatever you like and whatever makes you excited....

Its funny how Consumer Reports talks up the Honda Ridgeline. I saw comments on another forum on how a Honda mechanic says they have a hard time selling Ridgelines and they sometimes sit there for months without selling until some sucker bought it. Also, said they came back with a bunch of electrical problems. Seems like no one cares what CR says about Ridgelines just like how no one cares what CR says about the Tacoma and I do believe they are paid off.

Lol figures don’t lie, but liars figure!
Never fails to amaze me how our culture hates winners. The numbers have said that Tacoma has dominated the small/mid truck market for decades :).

Consumer reports types/writers/readers/researchers are not like me and don’t like the same things I like. I also don’t like the same things THEY like. This is why I don’t read or value their opinions. If consumer reports devoted a front page and full mag on how utterly stupid the Tacoma is, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings. It might hurt resale, because people consider them a credible source, but I don’t resell. It’s might hurt Toyota’s sales, but I don’t see a penny of that.

I agree with your sentiment:). But it’s definitely not hurting sales or judging from the prices of used Tacoma’s resale is not effected either !
I think CR target audience is dying off.

Unfortunately for the Tacoma it's not just CR that it scores low against the Ridgeline. The Tacoma loses every head to head comparison against the Ridgeline.

    Two kids.
You have to look at CR's readers. The average age of their readers is 60+. My parents subscribe to CR and they are in their 70's. Not coincidentally my dad just got rid of his Tacoma in favor of a new Ridgeline. At that age they want something that rides like a luxury car, they can easily get in and out of and can tow a small boat once a year.

I admit the interior of that new RL is amazingly comfortable. I'm a gadget freak, so I appreciated all of the technology (I've been jealous of the gadgets in my wife's '16 Civic). I miss the onboard computer in my '11 GTI.

But, there's something about a truck that looks, feels, and performs like a truck. I don't think "like a truck" is an insult. We're living in a world where luxury often scores higher than performance. My GTI got dinged for the small size, tight seats, and sport ride, but that's what gave you confidence while hugging the corners ... that's what that car was made to do. Like GTI's, Tacomas weren't meant to be highway cruisers. That means that the average CR reader isn't going to value what these vehicles do well ... the things they are meant to do.

BTW, I was the lucky one in my dad's trade since I worked out a deal to get his '15 Tacoma with only 7441 miles on it :D
