Saw this on the subaru outback forums. I like that the article takes a stand saying that, no matter what the vehicle manufacturer claims, excessive oil consumption is NOT normal.

It's funny how BMW sells a special trunk container accessory that lets owners securely carry an extra quart of oil.

Consumers is a little late on this revelation. My wife is on her third Subaru in 16 years, and they all liked a little oil between changes. I don't know if it's the boxer engine or what, but as long as it's checked regularly, it hasn't been a big issue. Subaru's are a little difficult to get an accurate reading though. You have to careful not to overfill.

We have a '14 Outback and it only seems to be using about a quart every 4000 miles or so. I have heard of other 4th gens using a quart every 800-1000 miles.

Didn't read the story but, BMWs (or at least some) have very long oil change intervals. Not sure if the chart addresses that or not but, seems a ratio of so many quarts per 1,000 miles or hours of use may be a good way to look at it if not...
