Ouch indeed. I swear that car company skates by on diehard customer loyalty, heavy marketing and the myth of universal Japanese-car reliability. No other way they could get away with the bad reliability with putting the EJ25 in everything for so long otherwise.

My buddy's wife had a 2020 Impreza Sport 5MT. I drove the car once on a road trip and really enjoyed it. Finally, hopefully the new EF20 engine is a breath of fresh air, right? Nope! The car ended up being lemon-lawed for engine issues.

Your mention of the rigged Samurai tests reminded me of the old Dateline story on the GM trucks that "would explode upon impact." Dateline was rigging the tests with incendiary devices to ENSURE an explosion occurred when they "tested" the truck. Shameful!!!!

You guys gotta get over that. Yes, it happened, but did you have a subscription back then? Did you cancel it? Those people that did that Suzuki hit squad stuff are all retired or dead by now.

I'm not complaining about my ex from 1997. She was a freak back then (not in a kinky fun way -- a bad way) but if I met her on the street today I'd figure she's possibly very different now and no longer worthy of having "lying freak" keyed into the passenger side of her Jeep Grand Cherokee; just a hypothetical.

Not defending CR and its stupid partially-filled bubble ratings charts or anything. I just think we've got to move on at some point.

    This.

And like it or not, they’re the only ones doing this kind of testing and data collection. Feel free to disagree with them on things, but they’re a great data point to consider. More believable than what I read around here anyway - in both directions. Some things you read around here point to tacos being pretty abysmal, while some seem to think Toyota walks on water and always will

Tacoma has been in the last place in almost every magazine comparison since it came out. Objectively you can't argue it falls short in almost all categories compared to competition. It sells due to looks, resale value, and relatively trouble free ownership after first couple years' issues of each gen are resolved.

Does the frontiers have a MT available? Us MT owners are like Cross-fit & vegan assholes, we need to tell all how better we are :anonymous:

    A few.
There is a big difference between having a vehicle to test for a week and owning one longterm for daily use.

am Pro grille w/lights, black tailgate letters, black badging, 265-70-17 Duratrac "c", Rear seat platform,
I have to agree. I find the manual seats in my 2017 SP quite comfortable for long rides. They will feel different to every driver. My wife loves these seats over the 2011 Taco (manual everything) I traded in.

I used to work for a company that had their products tested every year by CR. For one product we did not change the manufacturing process or performance for over five years and the ratings changed every year. As a result I will never consider CR ratings when purchasing anything.

Even when my Tacoma was stock and it still is mostly. When braking it has always felt like roller skating on ice. It will stop fine, but with the felling of flapping your arms as you fall down until it comes to a complete stop. It doesn't bother me but nothing else I've driven that has been manufactured in the last 20 years has that feeling.

I like that the Tacoma is old school and wouldn’t have it any other way . It’s a honest to goodness truck that suits me just fine.

Since I learned to drive and fly with internal drum brakes and been familiar with 'em since the early 1970s, and bought my first upgrade set of tires from bias ply to steel belted radials (Michelin man since 1981:XZX, LTX-AT for a 1971 Scout II in 1996, X-Radial to Defender on minivan to the '07 Malibu red truck, and the Defender LTX on this newest truck), and converted a 1946 Aeronca Champ from its added Citabria drum brakes to Cleveland disc brakes and wheels, I'd say it's a matter of getting used to working with what you've got. Like W.D.M. Bell hunting African elephants effectively with a 7x57 Mauser back in his day, he'd learned to use it well, since that was what he was able to come by. 2600 miles in a 1971 Scout II with 235-75-15 LTX-AT tires averaged 15 mpg, with the Farmall V8-304 and Borg-Warner 3-spd automatic transmission (I've rarely heard of that B-W before or since) and drum brakes on the AlCan Highway in September, a great trip hunting grouse and caribou near Gulkana on the way home to Cordova with the year-old Brittany, who also had fun. I forget exactly how a bumper sticker I saw in Nevada read, but it was was something like, "If it has Wings or Wheels, It will Give You Problems." That was 15-17 years ago... Still holds true...

BTW, Kevlar soaks up water readily (and frays terribly when cutting without special scissors), but it is less expensive than graphite/carbon fiber. Remember the old saying that if you wanted to get rid of somebody, give them a Ford Pinto with PolyGlas tires? Gas tank was prone to explode with rear-end impact and the polyester/aramid/kevlar ply has a different coefficient of expansion than the other plies in the tire, so those tires were prone to separation. I've been learning to build composite parts (Unlimited hydroplane molds and the tool proof parts assembled into the lighter weight display boat that can be pulled with a standard pickup, while the standard race boats weigh 7,000 lbs. on 7,000 lb. trailers, requiring the big diesel service truck as puller).
Jay Leno said in his test drive of the new Corvette with a Chevrolet engineer that Michelin tires go on every vehicle in his collection, because they're uniformly weighted all around, requiring little in weight to balance. Wheels, TPMS sensors and other things can alter that.

Wow…Not many Elephants hunters left ….The Scout 4x4 …I always like that vehicle…One of my best friend own one…1971 II … his biggest regret..not ordering the factory limited slip…he got struck in sand..a couple hours later..made it home…. The top was removable…park sideways into the winds…you feel the wind blowing inside the cab…lol. We use to fish at a fishing point..casting our fishing poles into winds…. We missed going there..restricted…Marine base…use to offer fishing passes..

Disc brakes are so much easier to replace…offers better braking…. Yes my Dad made us replaced the drum brakes, hone the calibers..etc..70’s …memories…most good…
    Aloha
