Inked1_LI.jpg Inked2_LI.jpg So this is a continuation of another thread where I was looking for a connector and yall Found it. I had problems with my friends Vacuum pump on his tacoma. To recap his tacoma was vandalized and it junked the motor. He purchased an LKQ engine and we got to swapping it. We finished but as soon as we turned it on the motor junked the Vacuum pump and it locked up.

See pic labeled 1 for location

Since the pump mates (with teeth) to the intake cam on bank one (passanger) it froze the cam and cause a cam issue.

See pics 2 for teeth and the oil inlet where oil flows in to.

Well I took off the pump and re installed a plate that came from LKQ. Here is where it gets interesting. The plate looks nice and machined... something that would come from the factory and not something LKQ would install.

See pic labeled 3 for the nice cover plate

Well someone on the other thread pointed out there is two braking systems. A like hdroboost that is used in tacomas with crawl control and this vacuum pump one. Which would explain the nice cover plate.

So I went investigating. Well turns out the donor motor from LKQ and the the original junked motor have the exact same cam According to the dealer. by giving them the VIN numbers of both they cross referenced the cam part numbers for both and both were the same number. The Valve cover has veins that carry oil from the valve cover and feeds oil into the cam bearing (it has rubber mating surfaces).

See pic 4 for where the oil feeds from the valve cover

Welll here is where it gets interesting. I looked at the cam for the junked motor and it has a deep hole that allows the vacuum pump feeder tube fit in nicely and have plenty of space to allow the oil from the cam cap to occupy the space. Well i looked at the new lkq motor cam and it looks like there is much much less space and the feeder tube seems to bottom out when trying to install the pump. It almost seems that whatever cap is in that new motor cam sits way closer to the back of the cam where the pump mates up to.

See the pic five for old cam with deep cam

See 6-8 for the new motors cam with a shallower hole.

My question is WTF ... I tried pushing it with a pick rearwards. I tried finishing it with a magnet. I tried shooting air from the cam cap hold where oil feeds into it but the air just shoots out the cam towards the front of the engine.

This cam isnt feeding oil into the pump and eating the pumps. WHY?! im really close to just setting this thing on fire.

ANyone have insight or ideas? I am really am lost here guys.

Also, Side note. If i remove the pump and install cover plate the truck runs like a dream except the pump isnt creating vacuum for the booster so it has manual brakes.

so is the cover plate from toyota or not?

what is the part that goes there for the crawl control version and the non crawl control version?

i would also be willing to bet the toyota dealer is wrong (or didnt look it up) since the cam is different depth.

Looking at the pics. Pull the cam from the new engine. That's clearly some kind of block off plug. Probably a press fit one. If the old engine cam isn't buggered up. Swap the cam shafts and be done.

Yeah the plate is oem. I actually found it in the service manual.

The old cam is fucked but ordered from dealership and THAT one is the right one. So now it's cam swap time. Oooh boy....

So it seems theres two different came. One for the crawl control and one that utilizes vscuum pump for brakes. The came are diff but according to the dealership (I talked to 3 diff people at diff times) the part numbers are the same. Although, they acknowledge there are two diff brake systems. So there is a deficiency of information at the dealership level.

Sooooooo anyone have tips for swapping out this cam? Does this engine have egine locking tools?
