Seems fair if you like the function/look

If you had to buy the parts to do so (assuming they exist) I'd wager they'd cost more than the cap.

Yes that's a decent price for that style shell. I seriously doubt it would be cheap or easy to convert it to a tailgate and window setup. Most of the manufacturers that make shells seem to have them somewhat modular to reduce cost but looking at units that are available with windows or a door or doors, the whole back section appears to be riveted/welded in then the whole thing skinned and corners added. I'm not in the industry so I could be totally wrong but that's what it looked like to me when i was researching them. I'm not sure who makes that one in the ad but you'd most likely need to source the parts from the manufacturer and for some reason they a) don't like to sell outside their dealer networks, even parts and b) they seem to think parts are gold and charge ridiculous amounts for them.

Personally I like contractors caps, but I don't care for that low door design on that one. i also don't care for the single small door as it makes it harder to get stuff in and out. JMHO

    ETA-
On a side note, you can't tell from his pictures, but if he has the tool boxes on the inside then the rear window isn't going to do you much good anyways as they obstruct your view (notice in the picture he has stuff piled in the back so I doubt he's using it). My guess is that he has a toolbox down the left side (no windows) and the passenger side door opens to the bed and the windows are there to make it easier to see when changing lanes.

i appreciate that a lot. i think im going to go check it out. i may be able to make a home made rear window out of plexiglass and wood or fiberglass or metal. i plan to mmake it into a little surf camper so it shouldnt be too bad how its set up. im wondering if the tool boxes will be in the way too much though. is there a way to remove the side tool box and make that a way to get into the bed?

    thanks!

I went back and looked at the pictures and I think I may be wrong. It's kind of hard to tell with the lighting in that picture but looking at the middle picture, it looks like that thicker dark black line above the rear door is actually a hinge and that back section may lift up to expose the whole back. See the way it has angular lines going up from the bed to what I think is a hinge? Maybe some sort of hasp on the inside that you release? I'm wondering if they don't have some sort of rear window that could replaces that and allow you to use your tailgate? The rear window hinge on my ARE is riveted in to the window opening so I imagine that one is either screwed or riveted as well. That may make things a lot easier and it's pretty cool.

The shelves in the ARE DCUs that were on a couple of our rescue trucks were just screwed into the aluminum frame, they'd have been easy to remove. Again, no idea who makes that cap though.

Honestly, if it were me and I were closer I'd probably go look at it myself. I've been thinking about going that route instead of my fiberglass shell. I want more headroom as well as more insulation.

Looks good. So does that rear section swing up in addition to the door? Got any pictures of the inside?

My truck and my shell are black, I wouldn't recommend them for summer camping, especially since that one's metal. Maybe a light gray? The metal shells should be easier to put insulation in if you decide to use it as a camper.

thats what im hoping for the insulation. yeah the back swing up but there arent supports for it so ill make a stand for it. the door opens as well and so do the sides window/toolbox. i dont have any pics yet but ill try and get some tmrw. ill probably just leave it white if black is too hot because i definitely plan to camp in the summer.
