Converting 4Cyl to 6Cyl

    Is it possible to convert my 4x4 4cyl 5 speed to a v6? Just pull the engine and use the same transmission? It would be possible wouldnt it?

    Anything is possible. But it would be better(easier) to grab the trans out of the donor truck while you are at it.

    lol everything is going to depend on what parts you get and need for what price and what problems you run into, your going to have much better luck asking this on ttora as well, and I say stick with 4cyl. mpgs.

    You would not be able to use the same transmission. The 4cyl 3rz use a w56 model where as the v6 uses the r150f.
    To make the v6 work you would need to use the r150f tranny with the v6 ecu and wiring.

    As far as cost you are probably looking at 2k easy. It is all the little stuff that gets you; slave cylinder, clutch, flywheel, etc. As far as time, if you need a guide.....well plan on some(probably 3-4 weeks if dedicated) down time as it is not a plug and play operation.

    a R150F is a better transmission anyway.
    the W56 is an OK transmission..but anything R series is win.
    Especially R151..bigger output shaft and input shafts.

    a stock 5VZ weighs in the vincinity of 460lbs,
    a stock 3RZ weighs 370lbs.

    3RZ- 150hp, 177lbs of torque
    5VZ- 183hp, 217lbs of torque

    For what you get, it's a small jump over a 3RZ..but not worth the hassle or time..
    1UZ is a better swap IMO.

    a stock 1UZ weighs about 385lbs..and it's a proven built motor.
    261hp, 268lbs of torque

    VVTI version: 290hp,300lb of torque

    Not to mention those things will rev to 9K with the right valves,springs and lifters...not that you need to rev them to 9K. lol.

    2WD W59's are pieces of shit.

    I've never dicked around with a 4WD version.

    Correct, w59 for early 4x4 tacos. I was thinking w56 with a w59 bellhousing to mate up gear driven tcases like i did on my 85 crawler. The two wheel drive is the w55 for hilux, w58 for 2wd tacos. As far as saying the w56/w59 is crap, is well.....crap. they are strong, and very logical choice for toy crawlers. Is as strong as a r151 turbo or v6 r150; obviously not, but the price to strength ratio doesn't really make the turbo/v6 more attractive. For using a stock tcase, w59 is fine.

    Op, I would leave your 3rz in, it is a very tough motor and the performance gains for doing the swap to me is not worth it.

    that's why I have a broken w59 in my garage right?
    the 2wd one's are PIECES of shit, as I stated in my previous post.

    W56s are common uses,for toy pickups..but a r series is a better tranny IMO..w series are easy to find..
    I have a W series currently actually..a 56 C, with a gear case..it's a great combo..but R series is definetely better, and a 151 has a 4.31 first gear..way better for your money.

    Good thread, minus the BS. I was also considering a swap in my 97. I need to be able to pull something larger than a kiddie cart. I thought the 3.0 might work. The 2.7 is worn out and needs OH so I considered a swap instead but that is apparently too involved. Sounds like a vehicle swap is in the mix. I do so like the 3RZ mileage (until lately) though. 160K miles and only needed new exhaust valves @ around 110K because I pulled too large a load.

    I'd just sell it and buy a v6, that trail disaster lift is bound to fail anyway.
