My 2WD Transmission was pristine, absolutely nothing wrong with it. The A340F is the one that had the black oil and warped TC.

I wanted to do the output shaft so I could keep my tranny, it doesn't have high mileage, buuuut this seems way easier. Maybe more cost efficient :hattip:

4 Year update for anyone who's curious:

Haven't changed my fluid, but I've checked it periodically. Nothing's stood out to me, never lost any fluid, and it darkened slightly over the years, but not unreasonably so.

Performance wise, I haven't felt any weirdness that I wouldn't otherwise expect on a transmission with near 200,000 miles (about 30,000 less than the rest of the truck). I'd like to tune my transmission for sure, though, I'd love if 1st gear ran out a bit further and my torque converter clutch held just a little bit harder.

Looking back I hope this write-up has been helpful to anyone else out there. Hope y'all the best!

I can't thank you enough. I am in that same boat you were in for days thinking my only option was to buy a 03-04 4x4 transmission.

I was bummed out because I found what seems to be a good transmission with low miles from a 2001 Tacoma TRD 4x4 a few miles away from me. It comes with the J shift case. All for a very good price.

Then I found one video of a person doing the same thing you did which sparked my interest and then I found your post here with detailed explanation and 4 year update.

    Awesome job man!

Quick question did you end up using your Tacoma PreRunner torque converter or did you end up using the torque converter from the 2001 Tacoma?
Just wondering since I believe you daisy you tried both out. Maybe I'm mistaken.

Here's the video that sparked my interest.

Oh by the way I noticed you live in Flagstaff, AZ I live in Tucson, AZ.

100% use the 2003 torque converter once it goes back in. I made the mistake of keeping the original torque converter in the older transmission after I’d swapped the valve bodies, and that led to issues with the torque converter clutch not engaging.

As a side note: Ideally you’d use a 2003 4x4 converter instead of a 2003 PreRunner converter, since there is a difference in the stall speed between the two. In my opinion, it wasn’t a big enough deal to warrant sourcing a new converter, especially now that I had low range!

Glad to hear I was able to be a resource for your swap!
