    Hello everyone.Has anyone ever converted a stock 3.79 diff w/o lockers to a 3.79 diff w lockers?
If so will it require a new housing to accommodate the 8.4ring ?
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

If you want to add the OEM locker, you need to replace the whole axle as one piece, not to mention the wiring. It would be cheaper, easier, and better to just put in an ARB locker into the diff you have on there.

Try to find out from Dealer if the pumpkin w the the lockers comes w bolts and gaskets. Dealer shying away because I’m beating him over the head with no cost surgery. Dealer giving me the bs that he doesn’t know which axle to cell me he would need the vin of a 2015 that has a stock locker .what a crook

Swapping it to a different factory Toyota part would void the warranty on the axle anyways.

it’s not a pumpkin, it’s a 3rd member style axle. You can’t swap the pumpkin. You need an E locker 3rd member and the entire axle to go with it. Not to mention all the electronics and wiring.

Sorry, but your idea makes no sense. You’re spending a ton of money to maintain the “warranty” on part of the drivetrain, but you’re removing that part, and installing a part with no warranty.

Toyota is saying as long as it’s their parts they will warranty it

They very well might warranty it but good luck finding a dealership that is going to actually do the swap. As mentioned its not only the axle but all the electrical and ecu stuff that goes with it...

If you are worried about a warranty I doubt you will be doing anything that will require a locker.

Bullet tooth I finally got a tech to give me the FSM on the swap, used it to direct their parts guys to sell me the correct parts. I put the thread out there to see if anyone else had done this job before and possibly get some insight as to any sensible short cuts(if there is such a thing ).The mechanical portion is basically an axle swap. The electrical portion is locating their “plug ins” and finding a place to set the switch.I appreciate your concern. Thanks for the input. I’m an ASE master Tech with over 40 yrs of experience and have taken many STEALERSHIPS to court and won.SomeStealerships & Ins.Companies tried to hire me as an expert. I understand it’s making a living stealing's from less knowledgeable people I have a problem with.

Your resale value will be affected by a smaller amount than what you’re paying to do the swap!

how much is this going to cost you?

Adding a truetrac or Arb then paying to remove it before selling the truck would still by 5x cheaper. Then you can sell the Arb.

bravo im so impressed but you're original point was that you wanted the dealership to install all oem so you'd have this magical warranty you're so worried about. If you want to install it yourself thats easy enough you'll need the axle and this http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/ulti...rness-kit-by-low-range-off-road-tdi-elwh.html but its not oem and you wont have your warranty. So if you're wanting a locker and added resale value then i'd keep your 8.4 rearend (which is stronger than the 8.0 with the factory locker) and add an ARB.

Wow ! Didn’t expect so many replies . Ok let me start if I was going to pay the dealer 5k it wouldn’t be for an axle and elockers. I’m Getty both pieces for cost from the dealer. Install-is on me. Obviously no one who has responded ,has ever done this before so I guess there are “no heads up “ on the procedure. That’s the only reason I started the thread.
I’m not a fan of ARB’s , for the obvious reasons. They may be the cheap way out but I wouldn’t do it.
My differential has an 8.0,so it’s an all around upgrade at a great saving ,for the dealer wanted 8k more for the truck if I had bought it with lockers when it was new.
The only magical thing that cold happen is that I do the job while taking only 2 Alieves not 4. I will let’s you know how it went.
My next adventure is to study the Engineers designed with this new 10 way seating in the trucks. Gots few relatives that are engineers we may be able to come out with a mode that is cost effective and work in the older gen,s. Recently test drove a 2020 with the 10way power seats . Really nice but the cost may not be worth it for some of us. Once again thank you for all your inputs & criticism. I enjoyed them.
