Going to be purchasing a new vehicle fairly soon and trying to decide between a 2017 off-road double cab short box Tacoma or a 2017 sr5 plus crewmax 5.7 tundra.

    A bit about me, lol.

Wife two small kids and one big dog.
My commute to work is around 5 km.
I do a little off-roading but own a side by side for more extreme stuff.
Don't do much towing maybe 5 times a year.
I plan on keeping the truck for ten years or longer...

Please help me make up my mind!

I like my Tacoma, but I have be honest....check out the Honda Ridgeline. Ugly, but a solid machine that fits your requirements.

I dunno. Don't think it's big enough for all of them.

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
For family and not much off roading I would go tundra..

    4runner or sequina lol.

when I finished my test drive I went to look at the back seat of a the double cab, thinking about a booster seat for my nephew to bring him camping since he loves being outdoors.
Would work fine for that but anyone over 5ft tall is going to have 0 leg room unless the 2 front seats are all the way forward.

No space in the back luckily for me I just have a dog and my girlfriend so no need for more space.
Even with the Tundra still probably wont have that much space. Probably better off with a 4runner. Kids in the back seats with plenty of room dog in the trunk portion (can even get a 3rd row seats for the back)

4runner would probably meet your off road needs, minor towing, and all passenger concerns.
you said km so I'm assuming you're canadian as well.
Just so you know I priced out the 4runner before I decided on the taco. With the lower finance rates even though its more money for a 4runner trail than a TRD OR taco, with financing with 25k down payment over 5 years the 4runner is actually a lower monthly payment since it has a lower interest rate.

Really think the 4runner would be best for you (as long as you can live with losing the bed) Only reason I'm not going with the 4runner is because I need a bed for side jobs and home renos.

Even though the tundra might be bigger you still only have the 3 seats in the back and the 2 in the front. With the dog (unless you're putting him in a kennel in the bed) won't have much space for the kids in the back.

seriously dude, if I had a family I had to consider I'd be buying a 4runner
    http://www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/vehicles/4runner/overview

already told the girlfriend once we are married and have kids we're getting a 4runner.
My sister has 2 small boys (4 and 18 months) medium size dog, they were thinking 4runner for a while too, only ended up going with a minivan since it was about 10K cheaper (kia minivan)

lol if thats the case if for most trips you'll be using the 4runner when it comes to transporting both kids and the dog, I'd say get the taco just because it will be better off road than the tundra likely will.
You'll fit the kids but likely not the dog.

You'll save a decent buck going with the taco over the tundra.
If you don't need the payload and towing of a fullsize get the taco, should just meet needs.

Ridgeline is more spacious inside than the Tundra, thanks to a lower floor (no frame).

Does anyone tow with their 3rd gen? I won't be towing much but need to tow 5000lbs 5 or 6 times a year on very flat terrain... Also any feedback on how the 3.5 does in the cold? We live in northern Canada and the temps get down to -40c in the winter.
