Yes the son is only 18 but according to the OP he had enough cash to buy the truck outright. How an 18 year old gets 50k in the bank after spending a year in college is beyond me but whatever. Supposedly the OP convinced the son to finance for a good rate, 2.8 percent, put 10k down, and take a 4 year loan which OP had to co-sign because of credit rating. Teaching his son to take advantage of financing when it makes sense and hold onto some cash. It's basically the kid's truck as he makes all payments and has a good paying job at the local electrical utility company. Union employee. Let the kid do some mods but maybe not do anything major like frame cutting until it's payed off. Or, let him pay it off early and go to town! Full high and wide Hawaiian style, it'll be his truck to do whatever he wants to with it.

I mean, what's the big deal, what could possibly happen to a 17 y/o with a lifted toyota?

I didn't see that same instruction to others who just drop in for a comment.

Not instruction. Just trying to help you navigate so you might get a response. A generic comment isn't the same as a direct response, and yours had the feel that it was meant as a response to a specific post. Certainly not a rule, but it makes it easier for people to follow who you are talking to.

It was meant for a couple specific posts. If they don't notice and reply I'm totally OK with that. I'm a newb here. I'm not rocking the boat.

Why? If you wouldn't have assisted he would have been forced to pay cash for something he could afford. You are not helping him, you are hurting him by allowing him to live at home and co-sign loans. You will be amazed how his spending habits will change when he is forced to choose between a 6 inch lift and paying rent + grocery bills.

Root cause is staring back at you in the mirror.

    Yeah.
We all live different lives and have different perspectives. I bought both of my daughters vehicles and am scared they will wreck them, one already did (not her fault, and she was thankfully OK). My fear is more about their safety, I could give a shit about the cars, and I expect OP might feel the same way. I haven't seen anything in OP's posts that indicate poor financial decisions, at least from my perspective. Sounds like a hard-working dude that cares for his kids and is easing them into adulting. He was on here looking for help to convince his son not to lift his new truck (that OP is not paying for, just co-signed). That sounds like decent judgment to me.

Question asked and answered, and now people want to bash the OP based on limited info and personal bias. Cancel Culture at its finest.

This thread should go to the dumbgeon.

You don't need to PM me again for disagreeing. I don't see how that is acceptable but I'm new here. I didn't get my license till I was 21. I didn't get my first car until I was 24. It was my Mom's old 1990 Honda Accord. I beat that thing to death. I have wrenched on cars ever since. I actually got stuck having to drive a fucking Deawoo Leganza at one point when the cash was low. I had to replace a timing belt and all gaskets on that pos before I eventually scrapped it.
Luckily I can afford a new Tacoma payment now but never assume or judge people. We don't really know each other.

I could care less if op bought his kids truck for him.
If the kid turns out to be a screwup, great, whatever, I don't have anything to do with him unless he somehow manages to climb a political ladder and run for president then half of us are screwed, the other half of us will be dead by then, so again, who cares.

Back to the original question: why not lift it that much?

Financial Answer: it makes the truck less useful, more expensive to fuel and maintain, and substantially reduces its resale value.

I told myself I was done with this thread when I had some guy in his 60's call me a Karen (first time being called this, HA!) for speaking from the heart and giving examples of personal experiences as I can relate to the OP and a small handful of members. Which in itself is laughable considering that it's slang from kids 40+ years younger than him!(and I'm the "Karen"!)
His post was deleted by mods and I deleted mine to not have DB's messaging me to tell me their opinions of me, which again, is laughable.
What I wonder is how many guys giving their opinions of how an 18 year old should be raised, actually have kids and have been successful parents that still have healthy relationships with their kids as adults?
I'm willing to bet that the majority have never been parents and are talking out of their ass:notsure:
People always have these preconceived notions of the type of parent they will be but when the time comes to be one, all those notions are thrown out the window for various reasons.
According to the infallible members shit posting and dissing on the OP and others, assuming they know everything of the member they are replying to - a honor roll student that has been a model student/human being as well as son deserves to be kicked out of the house the day he turns 18, all bills be dumped on him and should get the cold shoulder from his parents because it will somehow teach him a lesson.
Hard love and lessons are for fuck ups and troublemaking kids that don't give a shit about anything but themselves (which was me as an 18 year old). This kid is obviously not a fuck up. Saying he should be paying full rent and responsible for all his bills is not the way you reward a kid that has been an honor student and played by the rules his whole life. What do you think a kid is going to do if he has to pay $2000 (studio apartment in Hawaii) a month to live in the house he grew up in? He's going to go find his own place and disappear! Then most likely give you the bird and resent you for the rest of his life. It'll be many years before he forgets that treatment. Yeah, that sounds great o_O
Again speaking from experience and not my ass:D

Excuse me for the long post/posts, I swear when I start posting I tell myself it'll only be a couple sentences and then somehow it turns into a story book!
