1/4 of the truck is his now (he put $10 k down) and more after every month as he is paying the loan, and he still has $40k in the bank I can have if he screws it up. He actually wanted to pay cash for the truck and I talked him out of it- told him better to invest his money as loan is 4 years at 2.75% interest- teaching moment as some would say

Does he have any extra money left over? Maybe try finding an older rig to modify would be better than messing up his DD.

Reviewing the posts, I don't see any that were criticizing your parenting. You asked for ways to dissuade your son from lifting his truck and you got suggestions. If you can't handle them, well, then why bother asking?

Clearly a lot of people on here have forgotten what its like to be 18 and want do irrational, stupid, impulsive shit and want to look cool. Also to those of you bashing the kid for dropping out of college, you suck. School isn't for everyone.

As to OP, yeah I'd say don't allow any heavy modification until the truck is paid off and title is in his hand. Sounds like at his current rate it shouldn't be too long. Then he can do as he pleases but 6in lifts on Tacoma's are a bad idea and a bad look in my opinion. I have however been to Hawaii so I can understand his desire.

A 6" lift like he is most likely wanting will make the truck less offroad capable, less reliable, and less of an asset, not more. Simple as that.

And that's solid advice for sure! It's all about cost benefit analysis, and part of having a lien on a rig is trying to not make it lose any value. Chopping the frame would definitely do that.

The first time he tests his multi-thousand-$$$ 6-in lift with frame cut, he will probably crash it. Toyota will look at the underside and likely void your 10 year warranty. I hope you have $50k you do not need for retirement. Dropping out of college is not a crime, getting a "good paying blue collar job" is commendable. But even white-collar jobs are not secure these days and deciding his first priority is jacking-up-the-truck is mindless.

An $18k used Crosstrek would likely have been enough even on the roads you describe.

His first car was a 2001 xterra 2 wheel drive 3.3 V6 with 240k miles. Auto with no reverse gear so he learned how to use gravity and a few friends if backing required. Two collisions and one speeding ticket- not too bad. I use the car now as a back up to my 1990 FJ80 and 2003 Frontier and 1990 318ic. Son also has a 1990 240 SX- that we have changed clutch on, new fuel injectors, and air flow meter, exhaust just the two of us.- he found and bought this car himself- 90k miles in mint condition and now worth twice what he paid (BTW- title in my name even though he paid for it- got come collateral)

Why would you come to a truck forum for parenting advice? Do you know the kind of people on here? Lmao why do people do this to themselves and then get mad when people give their opinions. Let this be a lesson, Ask and you shall receive…

Son and I were talking about this and looking on Craigs List for a much older Taco he can lift and mod and do what he likes with his own money. Even a beat up Taco in Hawaii is minimum $10k and then you looking at another $10 k in work and still left with a now $20K truck that is not super reliable. Still could be in the plan if that is what he likes to do. I have told him leave the 2023 as is as it is your way to get to work on time evey day.

This thread peaked right about here and by page 3 had proceeded off the tracks…

Offer up some incentives, agree to compromise until it’s paid off. Also make sure he changes the oil every 5k…good luck

Not looking for parenting advice. Looking for opinions on problems with raising a 2023 Tacoma and how it effects reliability and drive ability.
