At 18 he knows everything, you know nothing. In 2-3 years he'll realize that maybe you do know something and he might benefit from your life experience, but for now he's gonna do what he wants and learn the hard (and expensive) way. If he does do that lift the first thing I'd do is cancel the extended warranty, get back what you can on it (or have them apply it to the loan if you financed it with the truck), and tell him he's on his own for repairs.

I could have only dreamt I had a father that would have helped me buy my dream vehicle, but it wasn't the case. I ended up with a decent job once I graduated tech school, and bought a broken down 1966 jeep. Only thing I was really good at was racing dirt bikes which a local Yamaha dealer took me under their wing. With the help of friends we got the jeep road worthy, and I learned a lot. It was a worthwhile experience. He can always go back to some college class's at night as I did once older.
Idk, about screwing up a perfectly new truck, but if thats his mission, so be it. Long as its him funding the entire project, its far better he learn some mechanical skills, rather then how some of these young people today are turning out.

Yes, reason my kid dropped out (actually finished 1st semester with good grades) was that he was not interested in all the party atmosphere. We told him get a good job and you can drop out, and he did...

If he's paying his own bills, including rent to whomever is giving him bed space (YOU?) then unless the job is paying more than any young kid should be making he won't have much left over for gas and insurance, much less expensive mods that will cost him in all kinds of other ways.

You co-signed for the loan (a big mistake in most cases) so you have a financial interest in the vehicle. Until he can buy on his own dime I would never let him modify something I had money tied up in. You aren't his friend are you? Be a parent.

He can do anything he wants once it's paid off.

Agree with you on the college, it was his decision to drop out, however the atmosphere is bad and even the job prospects at the end are not that great, and I have a mechanical engineering degree.

My kids last pay check was more than I made with mine- he makes 2.5 times reg pay when overtime on a holiday, and his reg pay is more than I make.

In the end I would let him screw up the truck, and he might end up doing that. He understands he will pay for it (he is paying for the truck now), Just trying to veer away from the train wreck I see coming if he did go that way.

Then get him to pay off the truck before he mods it.

Thanks for your service and advice. Yes in the end if he wanted a 6 inch lift I would tell him to go for it. I just tell him he needs a way to get to work in a reliable vehicle. Its a fine line being a parent, especially in todays screwed up world. You see your kid heading in the wrong direction and you want to steer them in the right direction, and at the same time learning from their own mistakes. The world today is a lot harsher than when I grew up at his age. Todays kids have active shooter drills in elementary school. A term that never existed when I was in school. And the day to day violence that is now occurring. "It takes a village to raise a kid" is no longer valid. Anyway, back to the Taco..................

Pay off the lien first. Put that lift $$$$ towards the principle on the loan or put it in a solid mutual fund with a rate of return better than the interest rate of the loan. My pops would kick my a$$ if I spent that kind of money before paying rent for my own place or paying off that loan. If he gets ahead on those payments that dream lift will taste a lot better when it’s on there than instant gratification.

He can learn one of two valuable lessons. Work and save for the future or work and spend money that should have been saved. The latter being much more of a difficult lesson.

    Happy Friday.

6 months is enough time for him to read, ask questions (forums based and in person) plan a lift setup/also reconsider if that’s something he still wants to do.
There’s enough trucks in Hawaii that’s 6” for him to ride in too. He probably won’t like the way it rides lol
