It's 65 degs outside with light constant rain. If I let my truck idle for a few minutes with the AC on the coolant temp rises to 212 and stays there. That seems high to me? Once I start driving it drops down to 195-200. For it being so cool outside that seems high to me?

My water cooled motorcycle will get up to 220 at idle. Ambient temp will affect the time it takes coolant temps to rise and fall, but at idle it'll hit its target temp and stay there.

That would be high for my 2nd gen that comes with a 180 degree thermostat and rarely goes over 200 while cruising in the summer. Maybe 3rd gen comes with higher thermostat? It could just be a thermostat on a higher temp setting. I remember my oem thermostat would average 205 cruising. Then, went with a Motorad and it averaged 200. Now on my third, an Aisin, and it averages 195. But, with third thermostat, I did a major cooling system overhaul at 200K, also replacing radiator, fan, fan clutch, and water pump, all as preventive maintenance.

Why are you concerned with a 212 degree reading?

Indication that the fan may not be working properly to pull enough air.

Then driving forces air through and temp drops.

Your profile shows a 2006. Why are you in the 3g forum with a operational Q?

The thermostat has a variable valve lift and set to open more than 8 mm at 212°F.
    So it is normal

Since the truck is new to you, have you visually checked the coolant level in the radiator and the reservor?

Yes I have, at the running temp it is at the full mark, when it is cold its a little blow the full mark.
