I had toyota do the head gaskets and they machined the heads. Timing is just fine and i got my power back.

It is a big job so i let toyota handle it. Plus they gave me a free loaner car.

I used Ultra Grey on timing cover when I did my head gasket last year
    No leaks after 15,000 mikes
Just clean surfaces extremely well and use a thin layer on both sides, allow to dry overnight.

When you say "machined", you are referring to valves and ports, not actually milling the surface.... right? Hopefully.

Toyota has specs as to how much can be milled off a cylinder head if it falls within that spec there are zero issues.

Just want to cast another vote in favor of replacing head gaskets on the early 4.0s. Mine ('05) took me several weeks of part time effort in my driveway, and I also took the heads in for a valve job at a machine shop. Not sure if they resurfaced them, or just reseated the valves, but compression went up to by about 10 psi per cylinder, to 180-188 psi -- and crucially, there are no more bubbles in the coolant! I also got new head bolts, new hoses, a new radiator, a new water pump, a new thermostat, and new gaskets for everything I disassembled. And it all cost $thousands less than the lowest bid I got from a shop, even after buying some specialty tools and a big-ass impact driver. The trade-off was enduring day after day of hellish physical labor and crushing self-doubt throughout the entire process.

I used the Toyota black FIPG around all the oil seals, and blue Permetex around the water passages, since the Toyota spec'd coolant-compatible sealant was prohibitively expensive. I have had zero leaks since.
