Coolant reservoir cap pops off when off-road

    the only way i remember to check the coolant level in the radiators of some of the late 70s (maybe early 80s models) it has been almost 30yrs though
    that had no bottle just an overflow hose was to open the cap with engine running and add coolant as necessary, these cars came in hot and we had to get them out in 15 minutes or less (something like that anyways)
    i stopped working there in 1993 so perhaps later OSHA started cracking down on that practice?
    not sure when the vehicles started being all equipped with a bottle to check the level

    now that i think back there was a time near the end of my tenure that we were required to wear face shields and rubber elbow length gloves to pop the caps while running and checking pressure in the hose.
    i remember one car came in overheating with the little plastic bottle just dancing around with boiling water inside, I think we had to pull that car out of the bay for them and wait for it to cool down!

    i don't know and the local 'experts' don't know
    could be a spring, bushing, bolt... i did get one bolt replaced/welded back together 2 months ago that was causing a MAJOR pop for a not nice price
    if the whole bottom assembly was available it would be $1000 at the dealer markup, these are the same guys that diagnosed my coolant leak as the whole upper radiator hose when it is probably just the clamps!
    but the problem could be in the mid lumbar section, whatever part it is that I put pressure on while shifting gears and taking turns/shifting weight

    You can find a used seat for 100 or so and have an upholstery shop swap your cloth skins from your seat

    I'm not sure why a new reservoir tank would not solve this problem, it always comes with a new cap. Are you thinking the radiator is somehow pressurizing the reservoir making it pop off?

    Lol, I understand radiators always get me worried about my back as well;)

    This problem is done.
    Bottom line is 14.00 will fit this problem with all new parts.
    If you don’t want to spend 14.00 Velcro strips will work for 5.00
    If that doesn’t work tape will work for 1.00

    I just replaced my reservoir on my '96 and it looks nothing like that. Don't see that working unless making some very drastic modifications.

    Over-filling the reservoir might cause this.
    Only fill up to the 'high' mark on the reservoir, not to the top, like you would for the radiator.

    also keep in mind that the level in the reservoir fluctuates with the temp of the engine, might look a little low when in fact it's not and it would be easy to overfill it if that's the case

    You're thinking of the washer fluid reservoir, this thread is about the coolant reservoir

    I always check it when it's cold. It really shouldn't fluctuate too much. If you add too much when it's hot thinking it's low then when it's cold it might be too full. As long as it isn't going lower than the minimum mark you should be good.
