Your uninformed opinion. The 8" e-locker diff (in the 2nd gen application) has less margins than the cooling system. You can improve your diff's survival odds with 75W140 oil.

Just because you don’t agree doesn’t mean you need to insult someone’s intelligence. This isn’t YouTube lol.

This isn’t YouTube? Wow. Holy fuck. Never mind then. Maybe he’s onto something regarding power steering fluid temperatures after all. And fragile Toyota differentials that shatter unless you use 75-140 oil. Game changer.

Toyota added a power steering fluid cooler and upsized the e-locker rear diff on 3rd gens to address flaws in 2nd gens. But feel free to stay in your echo chamber and stare at your coolant temp.
Next time think a bit before opening your mouth :hattip:

Wouldn’t it be cool if someone made something that displayed this information on the entune display
Now I would pay good money for that.

Calm down, sport. No need to get your panties in a bow tie over someone else’s opinion.

Thanks for response but in simple terms is this piece of garbage worth looking at and trusting enough that my 2-3,000$ engine doesn’t explode? I am thinking not...

Welcome to the shit show. Regular for me but I don’t boost and never floor the pedal. Others have different expectations.

Sounds like he agrees with you. I always hated the C&H display of temps, struck me as sugar coated reality.

Ideally, the dash should have several multi-function displays that could be set by the user. Engine and transmission temps vary more under load or towing or on long grades and become more critical.

Well you are right that Toyota made worthwhile improvements with the larger rear diff and P/S steering fluid cooler and also that heavier weight Dino diff oil can extend the life of the rear diff. That said, it really beats me why you prefer to remain oblivious as to coolant temps. The idiot light only comes on when you’re really close to warping your heads. And while that may not happen as much as a blown diff or steering rack (no idea really, I sure as shut didn’t bother to look for statistics on this) it definitely will be more of a headache IF that happens

You have been given a variety of options if your really want to know your actual coolant temperature. So pick one! Aside from the goof who said your differential temp is more important that your coolant, not knowing either will put you in the same company as millions of other Tacoma owners that just don't care. These trucks are "generally" bullet proof, regardless of fluid temps, unless your are doing something they weren't designed to do.

Just a matter of "crew resource management" and directing attention to failures that are more likely to happen. Not practical to monitor everything and still pay attention to the road. A few people here get butthurt over this idea.

Hell, if overheating is such a concern, start by replacing key components on the 10 year-old truck - thermostat, hoses, radiator. This will also negate other failure modes such as "strawberry milkshake" coolant-ATF intermixing inside the radiator, which wouldn't be caught by temp monitoring.
Regular (87) is fine most of the time unless your area has shit fuel quality and you get pinging (ref 1 ref 2 ref 3), in which case try 89 or 91. On the subject of ways your 2-3,000$ engine can explode...

This just plain "WRONG" ! It not only defies LOGIC, but every single automotive authority on the effects of overheating. "As an engine overheats, the aluminium material can begin to warp, swell, expand and even crack. A warped cylinder head could separate from the engine block, creating a leak in the head gasket. A leaky head gasket will cause your engine to start burning oil and coolant............" Therefore, If the vehicle operator can detect an overheating condition, they can mitigate the damage by "shutting the engine off"!
    DUH...that's called "temp monitoring".
