Cooling System Problem

Why would an oem water pump/gasket be better than a quality aftermarket?

 

Belt tension?

 

Water pump because I have seen aftermarket ones do things i've never seen with Oem like the impeller separating from the shaft and freewheeling along with sometimes smaller and different pitched blades along with more frequent leaks. For the gasket specifically some applications have oem gaskets which are metal and have what I can best describe as a "funnel" shape around the impeller which I assume it to encourage positive flow in the proper direction versus what i've seen for aftermarket in the same application which is just a simple paper gasket to seal the water pump to block with nothing more and when looking at the space the impeller would occupy in the cavity would leave a large area where the coolant is just getting tumbled around without a guiding direction to it

 

Did you confirm the system was burped right and theres no air pockets left trapped?

 

My mechanic that I've been using for years with no issues (for the stuff I don't want to do myself) says there shouldn't be any bubbles.

 

I'm at the stealership now waiting for them to open so they can hopefully find the problem.

 

Is the fan installed backwards?

 

Not that I'm aware. Is that even possible?

Did they say the head gasket is bad? Assuming that is why they had a borescope down the cylinder. Honestly couldn't tell from the video if there was coolant in the cylinder or not

Seems like everything else was just stuff they noticed. Leaking coilover, play in carrier bearing, bushing worn etc

 

Toyota verdict. Blown head gasket.

Well, that’s not good.
I would have thought the gasket would have lasted longer than 150k. I wonder if the head was slightly warped after the first set went?

Did the engine over heat at all the first time?

 

I’ve seen it but not on a Tacoma. The fan blades were sorta L shaped and sorta scooped the air. Backwards it overheated. I wasn’t involved but it took 3 guys to figure it out.

 

Sorry to hear this, I feel your pain.

 

It's entirely possible the head got bent because of the overheating and wasn't the initial cause of the overheating.
