Tirerack ratings are customer percieved performance not actual testing performance unless you are watching there video review where they have professional drivers test them. Most peoples reference to there new tires are the old ones that they just replaced and are old and have lost a ton of preformance. If you actualy had a professional drive test the tires back to back you would have a much different rating chart. The LT will be better for off-road

Makes sense - it would have to be! I did watch the engineer test video and it scored very well in almost every dimension except handling/steering wasn't as good as the Grabbers or Toyos. I’m attracted to them because they are supposedly very quiet and also they are a few pounds lighter than the competition.

Yep. Ratings are just peoples opinions. Never had a real issue with the at3s, did great on the road, great off-road under typical circumstances and never failed me in the snow and ice we get here (max 4-6 inches).

Personally, I always go with the LTs. Figure if I’m going to wander off the beaten path, I want thar extra thickness on the tread in case I drop off a ledge, slip on a trail and catch a sharp drop or something. Little more puncture protection. But people run the 4plys off road all the time and they do great. I just do 10 to “driver proof” them if that makes sense.

The single issue I had with them was the tread depth. It’s great for off road, great for on road and an all around solid choice. Handled anticipated (trail/yard) mud just fine. It’s just not a dedicated mud tire. I did run into some traction problems after a tornado came through my home town. Roads were impassible so we had to get creative. Obviously, that’s not a normal circumstance and I do not fault them for getting stuck at all. Vehicle was overweight and we had to drive through saturated grass fields with standing water. Just a lesson learned for me, so I went with st pros this time. Figured it’s a bit chunkier while trying to still be an all all terrain, so around here it made sense. Tbh, I still have those at3s as a backup set in storage. Served me very well and still have good tread. 100% would recommend every day of the week.

    Edit: St Maxx, not pro.

This all makes good sense. I’m going to go with the 6-ply to save weight as sort of a middle ground. I really want to do 10-ply (Es) but am trying to keep rotational weight as low as possible. Thanks for the advice. I feel confident about getting them now. One question I did have was how is the ride / steering with those AT3s? Is it firm or soft and is the Tacoma relativity nimble on them?

Steering was good, they get good traction on road, in dirt, gravel etc. Firm or soft depends on your tire pressure. So firm for me. As far as nimble, I mean, that’s a weight thing. Mine is a no. But, I keep a lot of stuff in mine. They’re a solid all terrain bud. I mean, I kept them even after I replaced them if that says anything.

I slipped so hard in my g2 grapplers. I was sliding like a mofo on road and had some very scary moments hydroplaning on highways haha

I had AT3s on my '15, when I got the '21 I put Evo MTs on in 265/75 16... much better rock/sand/mud/snow traction (obviously) but not great on ice or wet roads like most MTs. Noise isn't bad, quieter than BFGs and MTRs, especially as they wear down... wear hasn't been fantastic, they're about 15k in and maybe half worn, I'm thinking ill get 30k out of them. I got almost 50k out of the AT3s. Ymmv I have a heavy right foot...

Dumb question here - are these tires 3 peak (snow) rated?

So what has been in your assessment on Coopers vs the Wild Peaks? I am on the fence between these 2.

Still haven’t mounted them up yet, trying to get the last little bit off the wild peaks before winter. I’ll end up swapping them next month I’m thinking.

Following up on this - there is a class action lawsuit against LF Driscoll for their work on 95 South near Philadelphia. They had the highway tore up, leaving metal expansion joints exposed. I'm 95% certain my catastrophic tire failure was a result of driving across these pieces of metal, as some of those impacts were pretty drastic at highway speeds. Added my name to the list of complainants, hopefully I get reimbursed for the tire and wheel replacement/repair. No fault of Cooper.

I agree - this is how I run them as well (between 14-18); never an issue on sand.

Joining the crew today. Midas is doing B3G1 on Cooper tires. Printed off a quote from their website and asked Discount Tire to price match, which they did.

I was very happy with these tires and went through 2 sets with my 3rd set now off the truck and sitting in my shed. I just recently decided to switch to Mickey Thompsons Baja Boss AT just to try something different and because I was intrigued with 255/85/17 size.
