I know this will be a dumb question, BUT..

My dad and I both currently have 245 on our Tacomas and I noticed recently mine is LT245 and his is P245 and mine are significantly wider than his. I'm assuming the AT3 4S is rated as an LT but I was hoping someone could confirm. I always thought 245 was 245 no matter what until I noticed this.

    The AT3 4S are P rated only.

Technically you're right, 245mm width is 245mm width no matter which way you slice it. There might be some variability from manufacturer to manufacturer or from tire to tire but it should be close even if they are different flavors.

Sounds like you have two different sets of tires. If they were both the same type it'd be worth checking to see if you're at the same pressure but I don't think that'll apply here.

edit: update with a technicality on P-rated......P rated can be Standard Load / Extra Load / Light Load and it looks like the AT3 4S come in both Standard and Extra load

    from Cooper's website:
    upload_2020-9-14_10-48-56.jpg

and here's some reading on TireRack in case anybody wants it:
    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?gclid=Cj0KCQjwqfz6BRD8ARIsAIXQCf1QEdsf0phG1pdnoLPTZy_SE51BwYm9ToE5t3fWY4QAI_d-MvVYfHIaAmkrEALw_wcB&techid=55&ef_id=Cj0KCQjwqfz6BRD8ARIsAIXQCf1QEdsf0phG1pdnoLPTZy_SE51BwYm9ToE5t3fWY4QAI_d-MvVYfHIaAmkrEALw_wcB:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!3756!3!354820920374!b!!g!!+load +range&gclsrc=aw.ds

Learn something new every day. I'd still be they should be pretty close if you've both got the AT3 4S even if they are different load ranges both within the P-load category. Might be worth that pressure check.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I didn't even think about the possibility of different pressure levels but I wouldn't think they would be too far off? We are running two different brand of tires as well. I just noticed it one day when they were parked side by side and pulled out the ol' tape measure for a rough check and mine were a good inch wider.

I'm wanting to go up to 265 when I order a set so was just curious if there would be any variables to consider.

Since they’re different brand tires I’ll be they’re both nominal 245 but one comes in on the narrow side of acceptable and the other comes in wide. There’s your inch.

So 245 width is for the furthest part of the tire which is usualy the sidewall area. Tread width of the tire can go almost out to this width or be much narrower. There are also Standards ranges that all tire companies have to follow so you have a range of tread width and sidewall width (section wides) than can affect the look of the tire.

    A few.
Had mine in the stock size for 1 1/2 years and 30000 miles. Down to 3 /32 of tread. Had 3 flat repairs in that time and never been off road. They seem to be a littel prone to flats. They run a little small in the stock 265 70 16 size at 30.4". Decent tires and decent price. I usually never get more than 35000 miles out of a set of tires.

Interesting. I'm normally very hard on tires and had more tread than that when I traded up to a new set of the same, and I did have them offroad - not a lot but enough to have them on sharp rocks and ledges. Never a flat on either set and I too rarely get more than 30-35k out of a set until these... Keep us posted on what you replace with!

I have a set of falken wildpeaks sitting in the garage 1 size bigger. Was considering getting another set of Coopers or Toyo all terrains as well.

Just got a set of these installed in stock size. I was leaning towards a 10 ply like the grabber atx or st maxx but the tire guy talked me out of it and recommend these. So far I'm impressed, glad I went this direction. If anything they look smaller than my stock tires, but it might be an illusion since I switched to the Baja rims at the same time. Thanks for this thread though, it played a big part in my decision.

They do run small in the stock size. I had a s set on mine. 30.4" diameter vs 30.6" stock Tires. Good tires though.

I have to say, I've only been in relatively light snow since I started running these tires over the last 2+ years. Living in Tennessee, we don't often get bad winter weather - but like much of the south, we were pummeled by sheets of sleet, freezing rain, ice and several inches of snow last week. Only the main highways were plowed, leaving all secondary streets packed and ice-covered. These tires performed - their control on icy roads were even remarkable and of course they were solid all around on loose and packed snow as you'd expect.

Yet another win for the Coopers. ...now hopefully them being bought out won't immediately affect the quality or ~$600/set price tag on these excellent all around tires!!

These things have been as close to winter tires as I've gotten. Tire Rack did some tests with them too and they were the closest to the winter tires in terms of performance of the 4 they had tested together too (I forget what they compared them to).

From what I can read they're making it seem more like the two companies are getting benefits from the other and are going to remain separate names.

I don't believe Goodyear would end the brand Cooper. I would imagine most people won't see any impact or at least for some time. Most likely the biggest changes will be made at a corporate and the manufacturing level.

Yeah I mean if they modify the manufacturing process and cheap out on the tires or have the production done overseas? It's the end of Cooper tires as we know it or maybe they just won't mess with it. Don't think they'll mess with the branding

Yup was planning on getting a set of Discoverer AT3 4S once the Toyo Open Country R/T's I have wore out but they will at least run me through the rest of the year. Even though it might be a waste of money I'm debating doing a swap out early so I can make sure I get current batches and quality standards.

This looks really good although not as aggressive looking as other options I think this is top of my list of my next tire. Love the look of my Toyo Open Country R/Ts but they are starting to get loud and since 95% of my driving is commuting on highways need a tire that suites both on a offroad needs. Out of curiosity what did you have before and how are you liking the new tires so far?

Yeah, I wanted to go with something that looked more aggressive than stock but still comfortable since I'm on the highway everyday. I had to have them rebalanced after the initial mount but after that, everything has been great so far. I have an SR so I upsized from the stock Nexen 245/75/16 to these. I don't have any roar or vibrating that you would get from a dedicated off-road tire though. I don't what kind of off-roading you do but I have enjoyed them so far and would recommend them as a good daily commute/weekend adventure kind of tire.

Good feedback thanks. I dont do any crazy offroading more like weekend warrior stuff with fire roads and moderate trails, nothing like rock climbing or anything crazy. Like I said too most of my driving is on highway so trying to be realistic with what I need it for. Its the same reason I decided not to go with 285/75/16, although it looks great its going to really cut into the mpg. My commute to work is 36 miles each way. Was tempted to go C rated for the AT3 but I think I like the snow rating and the lighter weight of the 4S better. My short list is the. Cooper AT3 4S, Toyo Open Country ATIII, and possibly the Goodyear Ultraterrains from Americas Tire. Have K02 on our Yukon but they are heavy and not as big a fan on wildpeaks as some other people on here.
