Thinking about getting these before winter. Only did a few storms last year with my stockers but it was frightening at times. Have used snow tires on all my previous vehicles so its hard to comprehend having one tire year round. Trying to convince myself these would be sufficient.

In the market for new tires this fall. Live in Northern Vermont, on the Canadian Border and want to buy a tire that I can run year round, and be able to handle severe winter conditions. I was wondering if anyone can give me a comparison between these awesome looking Discoverer A/T3 4S and Cooper's Discoverer A/TW tires. Both claiming to be great in all 4 seasons. Is one better than the other in severe winter conditions? Also, since I want to run them year round, tire wear is important. Is one supposed to have more tread life than the other? For a while now, I have had my mind set on Falken Wildpeak AT3's, but then came across the Discover A/T3 4S online and have now started shifting towards them. Also found A/TW's as an option (thinking Extreme Winter Conditions), but thinking A/T3 4S will be the way to go. I appreciate everyone's feedback. Thanks.

I just had a set of ATWs I ran all year round and I can easily recommend those. They handled our northeast Ohio winters without a sweat, and they don't plow all the roads by us. I was continually impressed with these tires and got 65000 miles out of them before just putting on the 4S's. Could have run them longer. I also ran them overinflated a bit so had I run a better psi I'm sure they'd have lasted noticeably longer.

4S's are brand new tires just released so no ones ran them through a winter season yet, but they are rated for a higher treadwear warranty so I imagine they're a bit harder compound, probably not as good in winter but the tread and siping look promising. I'm hoping they'll perform in our winters adequately, otherwise I'd have no qualms about going back to the ATWs

Thanks bshammer0 for the excellent review!

I had it narrowed down to the AT3 4S, KO2s, Grabbers, Falkens....

You answered a few questions I had, so I just ordered up my AT3 4S's!!

Seems like Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct dont stock the ATW anymore? Is Cooper phasing that one out for the 4S?

That's what one of the reps I talked to made it sound like, but I don't know for sure. I still see the ATW readily available elsewhere....if this 4S is everything I hope it is I could see the ATW being a bit superfluous but I hope they keep the ATW around a while just in case it's not..

By readily available I guess I just mean available. Even when I was inquiring about the ATWs again this time around not everyone was familiar with them but turned out all the Cooper Dealers around could supply them. Not as popular as the original AT3s have been.

OK, the ATW seems to have better sipes for winter and I believe had a lower warranty leading me to believe it was softer compound. I'm trying to decide what tire to get before winter and i'm bouncing around between all year ATW/Falken AT3W or snow tire.

Exactly, and if you've seen my other posts where I posted pictures of my used ATWs it's true that the siping runs DEEP. So it's still there miles and miles later. Hopefully true of the 4S as well.

Another great tire is the Cooper Discoverer S/T. I'm not talkin about the Maxx, just the regular S/T. Great tire. I had those on my Wrangler for a few years before i sold it :(. They had 30k miles on them of all year round use and still almost looked brand new, granted i did 5 tire rotations. They laughed at snow and did pretty well in mud. They're a bit more aggressive and heavy though, but studdable for winter. My buddy had a Tacoma with KO2s on at the time and the S/T's blew those tires out of the water. Haven't looked too closely at the Falkens really, but heard a lot about them. I've tended to stick with Cooper for a while because I've been nothing but impressed.

Anyway I guess I'm steering the thread off topic so I'll stop.

wow BSHAMMER0 great write up. I assume you work for cooper tire:) I just ordered a set of these 165/60R18 4s today from Discount Tire. Didn't see your write up until after the fact. I may have had a little buyers remorse going on until I read your post. They we're asking 184.00. showed him Walmart online price he quickly matched it 150.47. that always helps with buyers remorse too. Hell I added set of Vision fury wheels also.

Almost wish I mounted mine white wall out. But then I look at my closet full of black Jean's and black/dark grey shirts and I realized I should just black out the whole truck lol
