Tire shop that sold tires to dealer said the ATR's are a good tire for both pavement and dirt road. I don't do and rock climbing or serious mudding so he said I should be quite pleased with these. He said the STT's are quite loud on the highway and would wear quicker. For my normal use I may keep them.

I had the Cooper Discoverer ATRs on my '05 DC 4WD... they were quiet on the hwy. and did very well off road, in the sand, etc.

The STTs I had on before, were very loud compared to 'normal' truck tires... the buried my truck in dry, soft sand so badly I renamed them grave diggers. They look GREAT, granted... but unless you do a lot of mud and snow driving (where they really shine), I recommend the ATRs or maybe those new Zeons I saw here... Those are new!

I ran 265/70/17 ST's. They lasted around 40k miles but the first 1/2 of the life was on my chevy fullsize before that ate tires. They kicked ass in snow until they got worn down to about 1/2 tread or so and didnt do well on wet pavement after the majority of tread wore away. They were fairly loud IMO, as loud as my BFG MT's I ran after them. There are other tires out there that i'd buy before another set of the ST's.

Same size as the Rugged Trails, on the same rims (265/70-16).

Here they are on my 2005 Tacoma (in 2007) at Mision Santa Maria, Baja California:

Here's more when the tires were new, 4-06:

I might add, that they were the longest lasting of all my Tacoma's tires (40,000 miles)... I just can't get beyond the high noise, terrible in sand part... and my mileage also dropped one full mpg +.

10-4... Yah, they are great looking... I wish I could know how a tire will sound before I buy them! For $800+ installed, I would like to be totally happy! I am looking at Mickey Thompson Baja ATZs... for when the Rugged Trails are ready to be replaced (and I have the bucks!). Your truck and mine look the same... Just wait until you experience the TRAC and A-TRAC when you go 4 wheeling!

Thanks for the opinions. Most of their use will be on pavement with the scatter trip on dirt rooads/trails in the summer. There is no sand here to 'play' in. They will not be used in the snow as I have studded Cooper Discoverer M&S for the winter on their own plain black steel rims for that which I swap out in the fall. I think I will stick with the ATR's then. They are giving me one for a spare as well.

I used the downhill assist once... it is for crawling down severe steep grades without the need to press the brake pedal (unless you need to stop, of course).

So, I don't understand the rattle apart thing, since you are creeping at 1-2 mph with downhill assist in L4??? It only made a tic tic sound in my truck, very quiet, otherwise (and that tic tic might have been the A-TRAC, as I have A-TRAC on automtially in L4). Downhill assist only works in L4 on my truck... and you know you don't drive very fast in L4.

The STTs went for ~$180 each + all the other stuff (tax, mounting, balance, hazard warantee) when I bought mine in 2007 at Express Tires in San Marcos, CA.

I bet you will be more happy with the ATRs then... I was, and I do a lot of off roading and a lot more highway driving. They just don't have that cool off road tire look like the STTs.
