Coming from a relative who is an LEO, they're illegal here in VA, but I'm not sure about out west.

kinda like going to a doughnut shop and wave a glock and say "its ok I'm a cop"

what I'm hearing is seeking approval to do something stupid. Even if 10,100 people approved, it only takes 1 officer 1 judge to have the final say.

I used to have a whelen 6 bulb 90 watt strobe kit on my show car that was white and blue. I never used it for anything but car shows and while sitting at Sonic's with my buddies (looked like a car show with all of us there). I never had issues with the authorities.

I went to a car show in June (in Tulsa, OK) and probably 20% of the cars had strobe lights of some sort. There was even a guy in a tC that had red/blue everything and he would put "POLICE" decals on the sides during the show. The locals didn't seem to mind, but he didn't drive with all of that on. I saw even a few cops talking to him and looking over his setup (possibly brighter than theirs!).

Based on my experience, I would say its definately acceptable if there is some type of car show or official gathering that you are displaying them at. Otherwise, its a big no no. It may be a question of responsibility.

Why even waste money installing something like that? I think it looks silly, especially trying to look like a police vehicle. I'd rather buy something more useful

Think you'll probably find that hazard/corner/marker lights are required to be amber in front and red or amber in back...

According to my state, only "authorized ergency vehicles" may have those types of lights. I've seen volunteer fire fighters or search and rescue guys have yellow or "amber" flashing lights. I mean NO disrespect, but I feel only wanna be's want to put Red and Blues on their personally owned vehicle. Purely my opinion only. It's too temping to turn them on in traffic and "act" like a cop...that will get you arrested and your salad tossed while in jail.

Depends on were you live, before I got a career firefighter job in MD I volunteered in PA, Most of the volunteer firefighters in PA have blue lights, as did I. I have since taken them off as I live in MD where they are illegal and I have no use for them. I have been pulled over when on a trip in NC, the cop said "I appreciate what you do (firefighting) but here in NC it's a felony to have blue lights" he's like i'm not gonna do anything about it but next time your on a trip here take it off first. It was a magnet mount light bar so I just took in off and went on my merry way. also color depends on where you are, in PA blue is volunteer, other places I've seen tow trucks with blue. in MD blue is only for cops. Your best bet is to just not do it.

I can't find data supporting what I thought, which is the blue light is universal for all states from a federal level and if you can see the on or off its displaying them and not legal. even if I'm wrong, what a dumb ass thing to do for fun and I would hope they give posers a hefty ticket.
The problem I see is people thinking its ok to play this game, quoting technicalities, they then try to use the trick in traffic , then no one gives a damn for any strobes, which is kinda already the way it is.
At work we use orange and white being dept of transportation, I see too many idiots pull right behind our vehicles even cutting cones thinking its ok. I have 1 magnetic orange stobe in case of night emergencies in my own Tacoma, could've used it twice but had no need, a safety vest is more useful.

IMO, the person who adds strobes for fun is the same 4 y.o. who beats on daddy's horn when he is gone.

Yeah, even if they are "technically" legal, they can still ticket you for impersonation of an emergency vehicle.

Not a good thing to have on your record at all. Sure it would be cool to have, but risks overrun the gains.

4 strobes and the controller for them cant be too cheap, I'm thinking $400 or more.

Could you imagine telling your friends, "coulda bought 4 billie 5100s but I got them thar strobes, so other Richard Craniums will think i'm cool"

i am running white strobes on my chase truck hooked up to my chase lights...

i use them when wheeling through the desert and have driven up to and past the sheriff's dept offroad vehicles and they just look... they haven't said anything to me yet...

i don't light them up when on streets though...

i will take video of them sometime...

im running a 4 strobe light setup... cost me less than $40 for the lights, then another $15 for relayed switch and wiring...

my wife says my truck looks like a tow truck now...

as for the red and blue flashing lights, there are about 5 desert race trucks that i have seen in person who run them with police/fire sirens at the races...

their light setups look awesome on the jumps...

definitely don't do the red and/or blue route... its too tempting to mess around with on streets...
