No, if you own your own business you can fax copart your tax exempt papers then you can buy up 5 vehicle a year with out a dealer license. Or if you don't own a business you can use a broker which typically cost $200 per vehicle you buy. If you plan on buying only one car it is almost not worth it to go through the trouble of setting up your own account using your own business. Just go with a broker because the cost of registration is about the same as the cost for the broker and they take care of all the paper work.

Got some work done over the long weekend. The paintbooth did not go over as well as I had hoped. If I had to do it over I would go with 1 inch pipe I think.

Overall though I would say its not too bad for being my first paint job. Really the only thing wrong with it was the little dirt/dust specs from my dirty garage. Anyways here are some pictures.

Thanks, I am pretty happy with the results. With out a clean professional paintbooth I don't think I could have expected much better.

In case anyone is interested I used a devilbiss finishline 3 paintgun. It cost around $200 (Ebay) but it came with 3 different tip sizes (1.8mm for Heavy primers, 1.5mm for base coat, and 1.3mm for clear). I am very pleased with it and there is a lot of DIY'ers who use it, so finding tips in forums on how to adjust it and what not is really easy.

My wife asked the same questions :D. One thing for sure, I have a new respect for the manufacturing process of building hundreds of thousands of these trucks!

For sure, the most exciting part for me is finding that good deal and making it work for me.

Thanks everyone for the good feedback. I am hoping to caring some of this momentum into finishing off the hood and the dents on the roof, but I am also itching to get back to work on my mustang.

I'd be interested to know what this cost you OTD vs paying for a used '05 that wasn't wrecked.

Well, whatever the difference, you cannot get the pride and joy of a job well done bringing back a taco from the brink of extinction from buying it intact. Props on the recycling project Dr. Tacosave.......But yeah, curious about the cost comparison as well.

I saw a truck very similar to mine at a local dealer... 2006, TRD off road, Silver, 4-door, I didn't test drive it but the paint was scratched like it had been through thick brush a time or two. Asking price was $22k.

I guess I would like to know what my truck would be worth in a private party sale with all the repairs done. Hypothetically, say the only thing wrong with it was the salvage title (and maybe a few specs of dust in some of the repainted areas :D), would I be hard press to sale the truck tomorrow for $15k-$16k? maybe, but I don't think I would have a problem saling it for $10K. If that's the case then I have just traded my own labor for making a car payment, and I break even.

I actually have a very detail list of my OTD cost, minus consumables like sand paper and what not. If you are considering a project like this send me a PM. I would be glad to show you everything. I think you really just have to decide what the truck is worth to you. In my eyes I have made the repairs so I am confident in the work I have done, it may not be factory so no the truck won't be worth $20k to me when its done but maybe $15k or $16k. Overall though no regrets so far.

This is very true. Plus the education gained is a nice bonus. Next time I am off roading and I run my bumper across the dirt I can just tell myself that I can fix that (it'll grow back ).
