i always leave in neutral for this reason. over many years the springs will sag. also i have to leave in neutral for remote start anyways.

Really it should be the other way around…parking brake always used and is the safest method, putting it in gear is the failsafe should the parking brake fail to do what it’s supposed to do.

I talked to Chris he said it doesn't matter. I never liked overusing the parking brake especially in winter. Had problems with my old cobalts parking brake siezing on years ago. I'll leave it in 3rd or 1st. I've always felt safer leaving it in gear, until the time my brother jumped in my car dropped the clutch and hopped over a curb.

I'll add that this shifter is amazing, seriously blows my mind how much better it is. If anyone out there in tacoma land is on the fence about it, don't think just order one!

3rd may or may not work. I have significant gear reduction (5.29 on 32’s) and mine still seems to move a bit when I’m on my slanted driveway. Might want to do some testing on that before you leave it in 3rd and walk away from it without parking brake set. Taller gearing and taller tires than what I have will only make it more likely to be a problem since both taller tires and gearing will overcome the engine resistance easier.

Thats right, i was just thinking out loud. I'll be leaving it in first. Been down the regear path with my old truck it's something I dont want to bother with again on this one. The manual with 255s does a hell of alot better then my colorado with 285s and 3.42 gears. Now that colorado on 35s with stock gears was gross. We ran 4.56 in colorados as the lowest option and it was back to near stock on 35s. Also cooked a set of bearings in the rear running 75w90 instead of 75w140 while doing 2k plus km on the hwy every two weeks.

Hah I hear ya. I don’t exactly love going down the regear path headache but I do love the results. I never can leave well enough alone though. And as soon as the new 2024 transmission is out, I’ll be buying one for even more gear in R-1-2-3, and taller highway gearing.

But anyways yeah, keep it in 1st and I imagine the shifter will be just fine. If not, I’d say that’s a poor shifter design. And my only point about third was that I’m right on the verge of rolling, with any less axle gear (back to stock), I’m pretty sure I would be rolling. On my driveway anyways.

I hear you buddy that's exactly what I did with my colorado. Let's change everything lol. Then it was worth piss all when I got rid of it. But having a well built vehicle thats absolutely unreliable is no fun. I dont get how jeep guys do it lol. I don't have a big issue with any gear other then reverse. Though the 24 trans and the older ones do have much better ratios, no argument there.

I've always left my transmissions in 1st or Reverse (whichever is a shorter ratio in that car). Never noticed a center spring going bad before. :notsure:

Like I said for all I know it felt like that when I installed it. Chris said the centering springs in the trans aren't even so it doesn't matter anyway. Chalk it up to late night half asleep overthinking

I don't like the 8ball knob, no offense.
Any idea if the stock or TRD PRO will work with it?
My Tacoma is a TRD PRO MT and I'd like to keep the knob, debating the URD for this very reason.

    Thank you kindly.

Meh, and some people think solar octane is a terrible color. to each their own. I can't justify spending money just for a different color. I already had it from my old car, I like the feel and the weight so I'll keep it.

I hear ya. I personally love the solar octane at least. Some people say traffic cone, but I think it’s the best color Toyota did on a Tacoma.

IMG_2766.jpg IMG_2806.jpg I guess if we are sharing our knobs. This is my custom weighted knob on the core shifter with the adapter. Perfect match.

Is it weird to be fully happy with the stock knob and shifter? Personally not a fan of short throws or hard knobs….I ran the TRD FJ hard knob for a bit, deleted it and went back to stock. Have tried short throws and I am just really not a big fan. Maybe I’m just the weirdo, but really the long soft throws of the stock trans seem to be ideal to me. And the stock leather knob makes it all smooth and easy to deal with. I’m a fan of the stock design. Maybe just me though, and if so, I’m fine with that.

Hah, the funny part is I have lower gearing than most, meaning I have more rev hang proportionally than most. I think the stock shifter just makes it easier to deal with for me, because the stock shifter is slow and helps to deal with the necessarily slow shifts. Otherwise, I’d have a short throw that is quick, but I’d still be waiting on revs to fall so I could let the clutch out at the right time. In other words, I don’t need to shift the shifter more quickly, I need the pedal to be able to let out more quickly. I have no solution for that, so I’d rather leave the shifter stock.
