I needed a new transfer case Dougie! :p

I'm talking like body damage and such though. When I get sliders and some armor then yeah I'll tackle a little bit more challenging stuff. I just can't risk it at the moment, especially if something happens now I won't have a way to pay for it. :p

Oh, my bad buddy:eek: . Transfer cases are pricy & rebuilding them def. should be left for specialty shops unless you're really on your game & have all the right tools...

Now go back to the mall !!

I'm glad you guys liked that little TDS section, its doable safely (no damage) this same trail takes on a whole diff. personality when its wet & rainy though & is by no means an easy one to do, something to consider when its a wet season as you'll see this winter.... but still fun as hell....;)

Thanks for thinking of me... I feel missed! :D

If his Taco is an '09 or newer, then keeping it in H4 would have had some spin control with TRAC... TRAC works very well, and is better than low range with open differetials.

It looks like he was in LOW RANGE, but no A-TRAC and no LOCKER (one rear and one front tire were spinning wild).

I see no reason to have open differentials in low range... this is when you want the most traction!

Push the A-TRAC button the first time you go into L4, and leave it that way... every time from then on, you will be in L4 (until you push it again).

When A-TRAC is on, there is no loss of traction/ movement from any one tire... the power is divided equally, so the good tire(s) with traction get the same power to turn as the loose tire(s) without traction.

The rear locker would have helped if he didn't have A-TRAC, but the front would still have one spinning tire.

I wish I was there... but the new date didn't work for me! See you guys another time!

I am glad you are interested in four wheeling with this wonderful machine! There are some on TW who get bothered by the same stuff repeated... But, if you haven't been aware of the vast information or knew what to open, I see no problem with helping a TW member learn abouit how his truck works. Sometimes hearing it here is better than looking it up on Toyota.com (if you could even find it there!).

    1) As soon as you leave the pavement, rotate the dial to H4 (Toyota reommends using 4WD monthly as it is). There is nothing more to do for max. traction in H4 (TRAC is active).

    2) As soon as you come to a stop at the edge of a steep grade, big rocky section, or mud pit, put truck in Neutral (depress clutch fully) and rotate dial to L4.

    3) Press the A-TRAC button (down by cigarette lighter/ power outlet). Never need to press it again... unless you want the tires to spin wild. You would have just gently crawled over those rock. The key to four wheeling is slow going so as to not damage your truck... and not getting stuck somewhere!

    4) Not that you would need it with A-TRAC, but if you wanted to lock the rear differential, you ONLY can lock it in low range! Push the RR Diff Lock button, to the left of the steering wheel.

More details on the 9 modes of traction your off road 4x4 has are in the link in my signature, below...

The 4WD Off Road can lock the rear in L4 ONLY (it will not lock in H2 or H4 unless you do a mod)... not at any other time.

Next time I am not there Doug, anyone with an '09 + Off Road 4WD (who hasn't read their manual or the TW posts):

In L4, there is nothing easier than to push that button, once... and never again.

In H4, nothing needs to be touched... TRAC is on!

The locker is fussy, sometimes taking multiple tries to engage it. Save it for an emergency only (as Toyota says to do). I would be surprised to see the locker do more than A-TRAC on getting through or over something... ie. A-TRAC gives very close to the traction of the rear plus a front locker. That added traction on the front is what makes the truck a tank off road!
