Okay, that's what I figured from what I've read: Make sure you have enough CCAs, and then get as many RCs as you can. That makes the 24F better, because it's a bigger battery.

However, I've been wondering: A better battery is almost definitionally heavier. How much does an extra few pounds of weight affect mileage over the, say, 5 years you'll have the battery?

So I got curious about this, and, using what is apparently the industry standard of 1% decrease in gas mileage for every 100 pounds, a 2-pound difference in battery weight works out to—about $1 over five years.

The 24F is a smaller battery with less CCA

Sorry I thought you were comparing Factory Tacoma Batteries of 24F and 27F.

Ah. My 1st Gen shipped with a 35 but apparently fits a 24F as well.

I worked for Interstate Battery for many years so my 1st inclination is to go there. Just the same, any AGM in and of itself is superior to any wet lead acid type. Shop around. Compare CCA's, CA's, and RC values along with cost and warranty. That market is heating up and getting competitive.

The bunch of research I've done in the last couple of days indicates that Deka Intimidator is a really good option, as is Northstar/X2 if you've got the dough. Edit: Odyssey also comes highly recommended. Optima apparently used to be awesome, but is no longer, which is sad, because they're the only ones that sell spiral-cell AGMs, which are significantly more resistant to off-roading vibration.

I don't think there will be any noticable difference between the 24F and 27F batteries for 99.9% of owners.

The extra weight might bend the radiator support while off roading. Less weight is generally better.

If you need house power or the like, running a second battery is probably a better idea.

That being said, the stock OEM battery is garbage from my experience. 1st replaced under warranty, the other seems to leak a little as I get lots of corrosion at the terminals and hold down.

    Go AGM.

Back in the day, I supplied lots of Odyssey's to NASCAR Infinity Series teams in North Carolina. (Go's to reliability and testing) Spiral cells are just so-so. If that were the way to make 'em, everybody would make 'em like that. Saw my share of failures with that brand. Good luck finding a Northstar distributor when you have an issue and Deka distribution is very spotty. They are around, but just not around every corner. Just 'cuz you buy an AGM, don't assume you will never have an issue. Like anything else, mass produced and subject to failure. Where you buy it matters just as much.

I had thought that it was a patent issue, that Optima has the patent for spiral-cell in North America.

So you have a 16 or 17 and it was standard? I have a 17 and it was optional, I thought it became start equipment on V6 in 2018.

Here is my 2017 window sticker and it's a $650 option, do you by chance have the window sticker from yours showing it as standard?

X2 Power, 27f AGM made by Northstar, I believe. Replaced 3 year old original with this for winch and other accessories. Especially while camping. Good specs, 5 year full replacement warranty. 20% off through March 7.

Shakerhood is correct, in 2016 and 2017, the tow package was a option that needed to be added on, even on a V6. In 2018, it was standard. My truck is a V6 Sport and i dont have the Tow Package.

I need to get a better battery than the 24F in the 18 Tacoma. Live in the northeast and am on my 3rd battery in 5k miles. Only the truck is on the battery. No outside draws. The resting voltage in these batteries drop exponentially over time/cold and seem not to hold a charge well. The CCA is 560 on the OEM battery. My girls civic has a larger battery and more CCA.
