To me the problem is they require smooth bodywork for good results. Then cost a lot more money to apply than most folk seem to think.

Back in the day my brother painted his 77 ford truck with 50 cans of clearance red rattle can paint, all different shades. Came out better than I thought it would.

DIY for under $1k. No, I'm not kidding.

That's assuming you already have a sufficient size air tank, if not adjust accordingly. That will include a decent gun, paint, and materials to turn your garage into a booth.

The process isn't hard. A little time consuming, yes. But not as bad as people make it out to be. A newer vehicle won't require countless hours of body work trying to get a "destined for Mecum auction" show car finish that you're not going for anyway.

I work in a high end restoration shop. We did a just exterior repaint on a 35k mile 87 Trans Am last year. The car had like 2 dings in it. New graphics too. it was over 15k. But it looked way better than it did out of the factory. Any paint job under 10k probably won't be done close to correct. I had my old 4Runner keyed last summer and it was over 5k to repaint just the sides at what I thought was a reputable body shop. It looked HORRIBLE. They redid it and actually wound up painting the entire truck except the roof. It still wasn't even close to what it was before the incident occurred. It looked fine but it was far from right. One more reason I am in another Tacoma. I kept seeing places I wasn't happy with.

I miss the days when you took your Mustang over to a "Guy your friend knew" and he shot the final coat after hours in the booth. We use to paint our cars a couple of times a year. It was a good way to stay under the radar. Now days, a run here and a spot there and life comes to a stand still? Anyway...just saying.

My family use to have an auto body shop that was known for classic car restorations. Common issues were that people didn't want to pay for their time, and they always had problems with hiring. Towards the end (due to retirement), they mostly only did insurance work unless it was for a friend. Quality work really is an art.

Also, a local shop that I know the owner of and have used, he's a similar level shop and he currently has a 1-1/2 year waiting list! He's got the same issues.

We have a long waiting list too. Most projects take a year or better and well into six digits. And we have several that have been there multiple years. Even with people actually paying for all the time it takes we honestly don't make much profit. I don't make much personally. But after spending almost my entire career in an office I made a serious life change 4 years ago and now do what I used to do as a hobby as my career. You know what they say do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life. That said I am purely on the mechanical side of things. Man I hate sanding.

You can get a paint job for around $4000>$5000, however the best (complete tear-down and paint) will run you $10,000+.

Wraps run about $3500>$6000. Difference is a GOOD paint job will last 20>30 years, you will start to see wraps/vinyl start to break down (fade/crack/peel) in about 4-5 years.
Just look at most full commercial graphics wraps on a 4-5 year old commercial service or delivery truck and see how bad they start to look.
