Looking at used caps/shells and was curious how much it would cost to paint a cap to match the truck color. Does anyone have some numbers to throw at me?

I got a rough estimate from a body shop and the dealer a while back, and I believe it was between 450-650 ballpark. that was for a short bed.

Oh jeesh, at that rate I may as well keep looking for a matching color or stick to buying new.

I got a estimate for a 6 foot campershell for $400-500. I ended up spray painting it myself with black plasti dip and it worked great

Go to Maaco. It was a perfect paint match and looks great! Cost me 290 out the door with taxes.

I have found a few on craigslist within a couple hours that are color matched and decent price. If you have time and are patient, just keep an eye out there. I got a nice shell (not color matched) for $150 and used the color match paint to rattle can it. sides look decent, top looks shitty. I have my eye out for a great deal on a color matched one close to me, just haven't pulled the trigger.

Patience, I need to practice more of this.

I found an A.R.E. Z shell, but it's about a 5 hour drive from where I live. If I take into account the cost of gas, and the paint job, I could basically have a brand new X series painted to match, Windoors (which the Z doesn't have), and installed. The search continues. But thank you everyone for the feedback.

Plastidip shell, I found it on Craigslist, it happens to be color matched. I've been to lazy to peel it off and I think it looks decent.

All about patience when looking for shells on Craigslist.

The first shell I had color matched my mechanic/painter did it for 300$. The MGM color costs 65$/pint and he said it requires 2 pints of whatever color you need to paint a short bed shell.

I talked to a body shop. he told me around $700 as long as prep was minimal as in no gouges and such. I'll keep looking for color matched as well.

Andrew, how's the Maaco job holding up on your camper (if you still have it)? I've tried the patient route for about a year already and still looking for a matching camper shell for my double cab. I recently came across a nice deal on a Leer but it's in a silver color whereas my '04 DC is black.

Ive heard questionable feedback on Maaco (at least here in the Texas area) but don't want to spend as much on the paint job as the cost of the shell.

Any feedback is appreciated, and great looking silver Taco!

Painted my last one for $90.

Painting a cap is a great way to learn the skill to do it yourself.

Do you happen to have any pictures of plasti dip truck cap? I have grey double cab and plasti dipped rims, bull bar, and grill has held up good for years. I found a red truck cap for 600 and not going to pay a few hundred for matching paint only going to use during hunting season and ice fishing oct - march. Was thinking of getting pain from automotive touch up I used on my tailgate and matches perfect but as easy as plasti dip is I might go that route. Thanks for any help

image.jpg Bought mine for 800 used and raptor lined it. Raptor liner was about 120 for the kit on Amazon and rented a compressor from Home Depot for 30-40. Turned out beautiful and took about half a day with the sanding and cleaning prep. Starting out it was inferno. I wanted the two tone look so it didn't feel like a suburban. Me and my stepdad like diy projects like this.
