Well, the American Petroleum Institute gave (sold) them the license. So I guess that means them?

Doing your research for you is getting old.

I said mile zero. So you didn't even leave the dealer, changed the oil right there in the parking lot? I'll assume you mean at the first oil change you replaced with supertech.

Cheap oil will work great at lower oil change intervals. It's when you let that shit ride for 10k miles. That's when expensive vs cheap oil will show a difference.

Of course I didn't change my oil in the parking lot silly. But from 5K on, it was walmart brand synthetic. Folks are genuinely shocked that I got that many miles out of cheaper oil? lol

Yes. Goes to show how great the 4.0 is. Also I'd like to see some documentation proving your argument. Like a service record showing 300k miles. Otherwise your argument is trash.

I can take a pic of my dash for ya, but since my argument is trash, I'll just let it be trash.

IMO, if you do it yourself (which you should), pay for some quality oil. You also don’t NEED an oil change at 5-7k. But I still do it because it’s easy as hell and want this 2.7 bulletproof I4 to last 200k+ miles.

Dude it's not uncommon at all for these engines to go a high number of miles on mediocre oil and service intervals. Are you new to Toyotas/Tacomas?

I get that, but I'm trying to figure out what exactly is so special about $9 oil vs. $3 oil when they both meet the same standards. I understand additive packages are different, but I haven't seen much if any proof that it makes a difference. Anecdotal evidence is fine, and I don't really care what anyone wants to run in their truck. But, to satisfy my personal curiosity, I would like to know if it really matters in the real world.

We had a lubricants professional here that seems to want to bash anything not from the big 3, but can't seem to explain why they are actually better.

My first truck was an '86 and I got 415K out of that one and I don't think I ever changed the oil in that thing. I'd check my dipstick and if it was low, I'd add more oil and keep driving. I was 16 years old back then, but I do much better on maintenance intervals nowadays...

As long as it meets the standards that your vehicle calls for, it's good to go no matter what name is on the bottle!

No one was talking to you Rian. Go change your oil or something.

To the rest of TW, I've owned a 4runner with 320k miles.

Yeah and you wasted a shit ton more money on "high quality" oil I bet. Shoulda gone with Supertech. You could be on your yacht right now throwing benjamins off the side with the money saved.

I don't need convincing, but I'm open minded. If there's a legitimate reason I shouldn't buy the cheapest oil that meets the requirements I'll do it. But I'm about do buy 4 cases of that Kirkland oil because I can do 4 oil changes for the price of what 1 would normally cost in my truck and/or the wife's car.

Let's see, Supertech synthetic is about $15 for a 5 gallon jug. Mobil 1 runs about $25 for a 5 gallon jug. 300,000 divided by 5000 mile oil change is roughly 60 oil changes over the life of my truck. 60x$15= $900 for Supertech. 60x$25=$1500 for Mobil 1 So a rough savings of $600 over the life of my truck. But I can see why some would pay more money for that piece of mind though. Like I said before, I'm prime example of not needing the most expensive oil to get lots of life out of your truck.

Yep. Again, I get it. $600 over the life of a vehicle isn't much, but I also don't like throwing $$ away.

Why is mobil 1 more expensive than supertech if it's all the same?
