I carry chains all the time, might have to use them tomorrow. It's nice to have good siped tires, but a pair of chains is always a good insurance policy.

I have noticed that a 2wd pickup has an easier time taking off in the snow than a 4wd pickup that is not using the 4wd. It must be due to the lighter front end and less drag on the drive line. I have owned both and I have placed weight in the bed of both varieties. I now quit using the extra weight because I got a topper that I decided was just a bit lighter than the sum of the sand bags I used to get. I will not ever buy another 2wd unless I move to a climate that doesn't get snow.

    No...

A 4WD Tacoma identical to yours has everything you have that is helping you out (traction control, M/T's, etc.), plus the ability to put power to the front wheels if the driver so desires.

Actually, no, not with a Tacoma. I made it out of a 3 foot storm in March 2003 after my neighbor broke a path with chains on all four wheels. I did break the path Christmas day 2008 just with the AT/KO's since nobody else had to go to work that day. That was a 4-footer, took me three tries to bust through that but it was light snow, not the heavy wet stuff. The only time I HAD to put chains on was in mud and that was my old 1990 2WD, and my old 1967 VW Kombi.

But chains would have helped a lot, which is why I carry them just in case.

Siping is cross-cuts across the tread, gives some flexibility for better gription on ice.

A prerunner is a...2WD tacoma. FAIL yet again.

To the OP, with all things equal on two tacomas except for one's 4WD and the others 2WD I don't think it's safe to say the 2WD is more capable. However, the stigma that prerunner's can't handle snow (whether that's 1 inch or 3 ft) is like an old wives tale. People got around in a lot of places in vehicles way before vehicles advanced to where they are now.

    A 5 lug is a 5 lug , 2WD Tacoma

A Prerunner is a 6 lug , 2WD Tacoma with all the same suspension etcetera as the 4WD 6 lug it's trying to emulate but without the capability of 4WD

    You dig ?

Nice! Ya my vote is no . The pre runner is capable , but will never be a 4wd. Pre runners are a fake looking 4wd truck. Unless your driving down the desert with long travel soaking up 3 foot bumps.

I understand why toyota did it, the marketing was huge. Customers want a rig that looks 4x4 for but with 2wd better mileage and all that crap. I personalty don't like the pre- runner option.

Back in the 80s and 90s 2wds were 2wds. Way lower like the 5 lug is today. That's what a 2wd should look like. Toyota was smart in the option of the pre runner. For sales and money a good marketing campaign .

    Thanks

    Brett

I have a prerunner. I'm fully aware of what it is. But you cannot say Canada doesn't sell prerunners because of the snow when you can clearly buy a non prerunner 2WD tacoma in Canada.

The argument could be made that your Tacoma is better in the snow than SOME 4wd/awd vehicles, but the Prerunner is certainly not superior to the Tacoma 4x4, or even a Heep.
