I'm not 100% sure on this, but pretty sure that at least on the enlisted side of the fence, OSI is prior-service only. Meaning you can't join as OSI right off, you'd have to join as some other job, work that for a few years, then submit an application to cross-train into OSI. There's a good chance it's different for officers though, but couldn't hurt to ask.
Also, I have a few friends in OSI, and they do enjoy it, but they say that it's a painful amount of paperwork and admin stuff too. So basically, in reality it's a pretty cool job with a lot of really cool opportunities, but just keep in mind that it's not all glamorous like a TV show, there's a lot of dry legwork that goes along with the occasional super cool experience. I'd definitely recommend it though, if I wasn't separating from the AF altogether it'd be #2 on my wish list of things to do.

Oh yeah and just my 2 cents on the service vs. service discussion, if I could do it all again I'd join the Army. If you want to fly, be a helo pilot, if you want to break shit, be a Ranger. The only way I'd recommend joining the AF is if you go PJ/TACP/CCT, or if you want to fly cargo planes, or if you want to be a desk jockey/paper pusher. If you want to fly fighters, I'd join the Navy. Can't think of a reason to join the Marines.

i kinda agree. i didn't join the AF to join the AF; i did it because that's the branch that had Pararescue. The AF special tactics community is top notch; but the AF as a whole i was very unimpressed with... it's really is the boy scouts of the military. i loved going to eat in the 344th tech school chow all during indoc and listening to the services trainees complain about how hard their day was because it was so hot back in the kitchen cooking and there were so many dishes wash... WAFJ.

as for a reason to join the MC... fleet anti-terrorism security teams. that's cool stuff

I wouldn't mind flying cargo planes...I mean any flight slot to me is sick...I can't think if anything better to be doing then to be flying some sort of aircraft...whether its a fighter, re-fueler, cargo, or help... they all appeal to me

Just so you know i joined the Army first. A lot of respect for those guys, but it is a long story why I went Airforce. Could not be happier but it was a pain when I went through the transition.

FWIW ... I got a small taste of 3 branches in a short amount of time. Army ROTC in college, Navy (E-1 to E-4..FMF-8404) and USMC (O-1 to O-2) ... then got out on a medical.

I loved the Marines ... but if I was going to do it again and do 20+ years & retire ... it would be in the USAF in a good MOS that can go civilian.

well, this thread is alive right now and lots of people are pitching in so i have a question of my own for you guys...

i got out of the AF on medical. i'm finishing up school right now (post 9/11 rules :D) and i'm dying to get back in... but going to the dark side.

anybody have knowledge or experience if it's possible or how difficult to get back in as an officer after being medically separated while enlisted?

    thanks fellas

i've heard it's possible, but difficult and it's a case by case basis...

i'm working on trying to get my "disability" wiped clean... i'm only rated at 10%

long story short, i took the med discharge because the AF wasn't going to let me stay in special tactics with my "injury" and offered me a desk or discharge.

With the direction the AF is heading, it would be an uphill battle. Just got news today they are offering early retirement for some airman in certain career fields.

    Always worth a shot!

good thing i don't really want to go back to the AF... still kinda pissed at them for how they handled my situation. i'm looking at either MC or army. i only want to go back for a few years, serve my time and learn some more skill sets

i think it's going to be an uphill battle no matter what. i'm "tainted goods" and the force is on a diet. thanks for the heads up though

Ok ... hypothetically someone gets 10% for a cracked ankle ... then goes back to college to study "intell" ... then goes back in as an "intell officer".

Yep ... that may work as long as old disability does not touch new MOS ... and it will depend on military's needs for that MOS too.

Six or seven years ago ... when grunts & etc. were needed ... many things were waived.

It might boil down to your new MOS and how critical and how well staffed it is.

EDIT ... If the military needed a "super rocket scientist" and you were one ... they would probably take you as long as you could breathe.

that's what i'm thinking... if they need low level O's in a certain MOS that will play to my benefit.

AF is the Cub scouts of the Military. OP join the US.Army. You will have much more options and not have to worry about being stuck on the boats with the Navy pussies dodging the asshole hunkers. Seals are to be included. I have many friends and family members in all branches, and the happiest is the Army Enlisted. Plus the 101 airborne is the dumbest craziest bunch of Mother fuxkers around town.

I guess it is worth a try ... but you will probably have to give up that 10% to even try for any chance.
