I have a Coupe modded TRD s/s off my old truck, $350 shipped takes it. Prefer Paypal. This is the 9" version. Very nice crisp shifts leaps and bounds better than the stock shifter.

What makes this shifter worth $200 more than a brand new URD short shifter? Not bashing the price. I'm legitimately curious.

    Lots baby!
I make these in various different configurations.

An URD SS is an excellent short shifter and have used one for many years.

If you buy a stock TRD SS, it sells for about $350 and it is a complete shifter, not just an extension. The big advantage of the TRD SS is you do not have a bolt on extension to the bottom of the shifter.

In the case of the URD SS you attach it to a stock oem shift arm. This is about 11" from the bend of the shifter for a 2 wd and 11 1/2" for a 4wd. If you use a TRD SS it is about 9 1/2". Shorter arm, shorter shift.

In both cases, the stock and the TRD SS shifter arm has internal rubber bushings that wear out over time. This makes the shifter sloppy or loose. When I modify these, I removed the internal bushings and replace it with a polyurethane epoxy. This makes the shifter feel firmer than when the shifter arm is new. The trade off, is the shifter will transmit more noise into the cab.

Coupe when you mention more noise what do you mean? I have a stock set-up and about to buy Fluffers short shifter this Friday. I had to replace the whole tower not to long ago because mine would no longer go into reverse and was chattering like a low metal vibration, which BTW is back again. So I was just curious.

The stock shifter or TRD SS is hollow. At the bottom, there is a center bent shaft that fits into a rubber bushing. The upper end of this center shaft has a centralizer bushing. This makes the shifting a little sloppy. Toyota does this to help keep the transmission vibration from entering the cab.

When I rebuild or modify these, I fill the cavity with polyurethane epoxy. The makes the shifter feel really firm, but this harder material does allow some noise to transfer to the cab. This usually only happens at wide open throttle. Not all trucks will do this. I am not sure why, other than stack up of dimensions. If you do get some noise, there are a couple of tricks that can tone it down.

    1. Use a heavy shift ball.
    2. If you use an aftermarket shift ball with metal threads, use a couple of wraps of teflon tape on the end of the shifter.
    3. Sometimes the metal ring on the top of the shift boot will clatter on the shifter. Try to position this so the ring does not ride on the metal shifter.

I have the tower part of the shifter if you need a replacement.

@Coupe so you're saying that the TRD s/s is better than the urd?

    Not really. Both have advantages.

First off both shift equally well. I personally think the TRD shifts easier into reverse. Both are harder than stock to put into reverse.

The URD is less expensive. It is made well and has a long track history. It does have an extension that bolts onto the bottom of the shifter. The TRD is integrated into the shifter. It's just one thing that you do not have to worry about on the TRD.

If I was on a budget I would use an URD with one of my modded oem shifter stalks. I charge $120 + your old shifter for a core. The URD is on sale for $110. So for $230 you get a nice shifter. I can make the stalk from 8 1/2" to a stock height of 11 1/2" (11" for X-Runners). I used this on my own truck before switching to a T56 Magnum transmission.

If I had a little more cash to play with I would look for a used TRD SS. One that is not worn out sells used for about $250. A new one sells for $350. I can mod these for $120. The thing that makes the TRD more costly is the cores are much harder to find and they will cost more.
