How much are you looking at saving?

    Colors?

    Mileage difference?

I have an '02 xtra cab SR5 2.7 4cyl. automatic 4x4 that Toyota just Re-framed...... only 43k and it will be mine for a long time...

This 'lil truck has done its work and more ( plus survived 2 teenage drivers;) ) and now with the new frame a receiver is in the works:cool:

Do your "homework" on the "Taco" you are viewing to make sure the Recalls have been done and then make an offer....Good luck and welcome to the world of Toyota.

im thinking 5.5k for a down payment.

was thinking white or a dark charcoal grey (if they made it during that year)

ideally nothing more than 80k miles on the 02.

also have a very good friend that said he was willing to go to market for me and just charge $100 over the cost of market fees and buying price.

Good luck finding what you are looking for. The first gen's are becoming scarce.

they have a 04 4cyl auto here at a dealer nearby but im looking for a manual. only reason im not looking at 05 is that supposedly the frame and other items on them are not as robust as the first generations is this true ?

Hmmm...........Tough question. The tailgate on the +05's is crappy versus the first gens. I owned a first gen and could not hurt it. It tackled everything I threw at it. I have never owned a second gen but after reading everything I have (like the post and complaints here on TW), I would be reluctant to buy one. But that is JMHO and it may be considered biased.

The truck you are looking for was the truck I owned, damn rust buyback.

The 01-04's are still good, basically the same truck as the 95.5-00's. They had some different options like the 4 doors. They replace the frames versus buying them back.

    i have an 02

ive added quite a bit to it...but its all things to help it perform better offroad

as a stock truck...its an incredible truck

its probably going to be difficult to find an 01-04 truck with less than 80K in the price range you initially mentioned i think...but depending on where you are...and where the truck has spent its life...you wouldnt be making an awful decision purchasing one with more miles

is there any reason youre excluding 03?

not really 03s work as well :p 80k miles ideally but i would be alright all the way up too 100k assuming it in good condition because don't they usually last way more than 300k with proper care ?

    short answer yes

on any 01-04...make sure if youre in a heavy road salt state that you have the frame checked for frame rot

there was also a recall on the lower ball joints...and around 80-90k on a v6...you'll need the timing belt replaced...and possibly the water pump

if they havent been...its around $500-$800 to get done...

well im going for the 2.7l 4 cylinder which i think is a more robust engine along with better gas mileage. is Oregon and Washington considered a high salt state ? also is the trd package worthwhile ?

I am not sure if they are considered a high salt state or not. With regards to the TRD package, it all depends on your intentions with the truck. The TRD package included an electric locker in the rear, oversized tires (31 x 10.5 x 15) and a beefer suspension. The suspension had one more leaf than a non-TRD and Bilstein shocks (which were worthless) all around. It does add more value to the truck though. Mine was TRD and I never used the e-locker.

or should i try looking at a old 94 toyota pickup in good condition ? where there and glaring notable problems with them ? like the rust problems of the 1st gen tacomas or the engine mounts problems of the 05 ?

Remember, the older trucks will not have the safety equipment that they have today. ;) Just keep that in mind. ;)

Found used pickups seem to be holding their value even in this market. Personally don't feel they are a good value, as you'd be looking at higher maintenance costs. Girlfriends last car cost more/month in repairs, then payments on a new one. (averaged out over 9 months)
New base model 4 cyl, manual is quite reasonable.

Found used Ford rangers are very plentiful. Toyotas not so.

I'd really look at new, esp. if you have a down payment.
Good time to barter on an 09, as 2010's are shipping.

but you see my max payment i can do is $200 and thats including insurance because im going to college otherwise i would look at buying new or almost new meaning the max money i can spend on the actual truck is about $150 a month. even with my family connection i dont think i could get a new 09 that low
