Couldn't put my hands on it today - but there is test information that shows how engine hp varies with intake air temperature. My radiator water - that forced-air uses to fully heat the underhood area, usually runs at 185 deg F. The test data originally published by Holley showed that dropping intake air temp by 10 degrees raised hp by 1 percent. All auto makers have taken this to heart and provide a pathway for their engines to breathe outside air. Not hard to get a temp reduction of many percent - enough to reduce fuel consumption a measurable amount.

Hey guys, I've been thinking of doing the cowl intake soon.
    BUT...
One of my concerns is snow build-up on the cowl. How much wood this affect the engine intake?
The picture below is what my (and everyone in the city) cowl looks like most of the time in the winter.

Well, I live in an area that gets snow accumulation and my Truck sits outside the garage, and it's not been an issue for me.

Keep in mind that your cowl has air intakes that also lead into the fender, and if you take the extra step to open up the other side, both fenders. So you shouldn't starve for air. It's why when it's covered with snow like that you can still pull fresh air in from outside via your climate control.

    Thanks guys!
I understand that the heater works fine with the windshield and cowl full of snow but I feel like it blows harder when cleared out. Maybe it's just something I made up in my mind lol
With the cowl intake, I will make sure I keep the area a little more clear but it's just a PITA.
I will drill some extra holes for sure and add some screens.

How do you find the noise? I read that some say you can hear the intake from inside.

I don't notice it. But I also drive with my windows down and stereo up a lot. Plus since I removed my jump seats and back panel, I hear noise from the cab vent more often than any noise I'd hear from the intake.

Holes in the sidewall into the fender on both sides help with having extra air to intake.
I only notice it when I have both the radio and hvac turned off and I stomp it... which doesn't happen very often, and even then I wouldn't say its loud or annoying. I think it sounds pretty cool.

I wonder how the static air pressure in the cowl compares to the wheel well.

Cowl induction isn't anything new, Race cars use cowl induction to draw in the cool-high pressure air that forms around the cowl. Albeit not as efficient as a cowl hood, but still.

Yeah , I understand in this case it’s more about drawing from a cleaner air source. I was just wondering if there was much difference. Probably not since it’s hard to increase pressure beyond a minimal amount. Both locations are just marginally better than so called “low pressure” sources like a hood scoop unless that scoop is supersized.

I haven't really noticed any change in mpg or power since the switch, so I can't imagine its much of a pressure difference vs the OEM location.

On recirc heating/cooling shouldn’t be any different but flow thru it certainly could make a difference.

Whole lot of RPMs and not a lot to show for it

For everyone else I did it mainly to get the end of the intake out of the wheel well and get it higher on the vehicle. The stories of deep puddles hydro locking engines scares me.

Exactly why I want to move it. Also I hate how dirty my filter is after a weekend on the dusty gravel roads.
If the water is passed my cowl other than a splash, I think I will have more problems lol

Worst case if you are in super fluffy snow and some gets sucked in, the filter should catch most of it :D
