snorkel is a add on to stock airbox....this firewall re-route eliminates stock airbox hence the issue with Cali smog check

It does not eliminate the stock air box.

i guess your smog guys are much nicer than the Sacramento people i had to deal with...they saw modifications and gave me a thumbs down everywhere....your right on technically the stock airbox is in place but the plumbing part is what raised flags

to each their own good luck to who inspects the trucks i guess

I have not had to have mine smoged yet. I believe next year I will but I plan on stopping and talking with my smog guy before I go in to see what he says about it. Also, @Taco-Obsessed i have this done if you wanted to check one out in person to help you make up your mind.

I haven’t experienced this with my Tacoma, but I have with cars in the past. They pop the hood and I get an immediate fail. They won’t even touch it without seeing a CARB legal sticker or badge on it.

I always keep stock intakes for that reason.

Maybe I’ve just been unlucky and always gotten strict technicians

Many cheap aftermarket intakes are cheap because they aren’t carb certified:

Modifying or tampering with a vehicle's engine can reduce the functionality of its emission controls. As such, California and CARB have established an anti-tampering law, Vehicle Code Section 27156 (VC 27156). The act of adding any aftermarket part, including a cold air intake, is considered an act of tampering with a smog-controlled engine. In other words, you could be breaking California law by adding an aftermarket cold air intake onto their vehicle, unless that cold air intake has received a CARB-issued exemption.

    CARB Certification
Getting an aftermarket engine part to meet CARB certification is a costly and lengthy process. An aftermarket product that has been CARB-certified has been thoroughly evaluated and tested to prove that it is reliable and won't increase a vehicle's harmful emissions. CARB-certified aftermarket products will have a sticker or badge with a number detailing its Executive Order (EO) exemption status. This EO number will show smog control technicians, members of law enforcement and others that the part does not violate VC 27156.

You could achieve the same effect without losing carb cert by just extending the pipe from the stock location inside the fender well back through the side vent of the cowled area. I seriously doubt any technician will go to the trouble of pulling the well liner or cowl to look for it. It would have a longer path but still only half the added length of a full snorkle. You could probably get away with compensating for the added length by boring out the hole into the airbox and using 4" pipe. On my 2nd gen the airbox is against the sidewall and the input is obviously necked down.

curious, are snorkels carb certified? With the amount of people running snorkels they must pass smog right?

Guess it depends on the tech.

Stock air box means it should pass smog

Awww Fuck, and we need to find that guy next door.

Are you going to try other shops or temporarily reroute back to pass? Did you use that free space already?

It will only take me 10 minutes to swap it back when I need to go smog. That space is open.

This will probably be the route I go. I do want to use that space for a compressor (locker and regear in next 6 months) and I could just temporarily remove that too for smog. I am still in research mode but I dont think that would be an issue.

There’s always that “shop nextdoor”. Talk to some mod shops and ask if they know any places that will smog a failed car if you slip em some cash... Specifically tuner/ricer shops usually have a place they take their customers’ cars to
