Got this mod done today, all in all took a couple of hours. After reading all the threads starting from the original back in 2013, took points from several different takes on this. Went with a 4" to 3" silicone elbow, 3" aluminum straight pipe with silicone pipe cover, cut a 3¹/4 hole, had to dremmel out a little to make room for the gasket. First I tried the idea of cutting the aluminum pipe in the cowl at an angle to prevent back splash from underneath
    20201022_174106.jpg
I was not happy with it so I went a step further and put another silicone elbow on the cowl end and cut to the angle needed, much happier with it.

The HVAC intake will flood well before the motor intake will. I planned on doing the divider but tested without and the noise is minimal, only noticeable at full throttle, a subtle growl, and I actually like the noise. HVAC does not seem to be fighting for air so I am foregoing the divider. Still need to cut the extra holes on the sides of the cowl and add the chicken wire to keep rodents out

This is a GREAT alternative to a snorkel! Thanks to all that posted ideas and suggestions, especially OP! I feel much more confident for river crossings!

Cowl induction is a much cleaner install than the add-on growth of a snorkel.

Absolutely! I despise the look of a snorkel, and with the intake in the cowl, I would have to get in about 5 feet of water before it flooded. Best mod I've done yet!

did the this yesterday. i could have gone a lil more toward passenger side cuz the intake isn't perpendicular to the cowl but the silicone elbow bends and works out fine. def worth the 25 dollars

Just the cowl intake, but I'm on a 4" lift with 35's, cowl comes up to my chest and I'm 5'11"

Shouldn't you walk a water crossing before you drive into it?

An 8' drop off could wreck your day

general rule is to walk it, the safe way, but not always the fun way haha

I always get a look as best I can, usually don't walk it first, it's always a gamble. With this new mod I hope I don't get too confident and end up in 8 feet of water, that might be a little bit too deep

Maybe I should rephrase that question....

Shouldn't you walk a water crossing before you dive into it?

I just toss some rocks and gauge the depth by the sound it makes.

Anybody here running a dual battery setup with this mod? If so, did you fabricate a battery holder or buy one from a company, and if so, which company?

    Got pics?

Does anyone that gets snow and ice all winter have this mod done? Curious how that would work out.

The cowl does well at keeping out water/snow. I haven’t had any issues in the few times I’ve been in snow

did mine a while back. Maybe these pictures will help someone determine where to drill the holes. I used an aluminum piece with a bend and cut into the bend to have a little extra lip and angle away from the cabin air. Needed a solution after cutting and sealing up the fenders for 35s and wasn’t huge on snorkels.

I mean, I drive in the rain all the time with my A/C running and it doesn't get into the truck through the vents, it shouldn't end up in my intake either. Since I'm in Ohio, and this is the first winter I'm experiencing this with, please ask again in spring/summer. :)

I'm interested in doing this mod to fit a dual battery, I have the ABS module in the corner where everyone else puts a 2nd battery. Been following this thread for a few months hoping someone else has done it so I don't have to make it all up as I go :p

So I mean, just to take a stab at it, there's two paths here right? The path where you're fabricating a battery tray into the location where the intake used to route (there's more than large enough a cavity in mine to do that, but I also don't have the secondary air injector/filter housing, being a 2009) - and then there's this, that precludes the notion of this intake adjustment doing anything to help or hurt your setup of a second battery: https://www.genesisoffroad.com/2gen-tacoma-dual-battery-kit

All those dual battery kits are ridiculously expensive to me for not including the batteries themselves. Plus I think the 2nd battery on P-Side is better for weight distribution and having clean wiring. I believe I could make it happen once I start it but I just like to see an example of it being done first for inspiration :D
