Be glad you get to hunt with a rifle. In OH no rifles allowed...shotgun only. Though rifled barrel shotguns w/ Hornady SST shoots pretty good out to say 200 yards.

Nah thats not bad. Ohio has an archery season that runs roughly from oct 1st till feb 1st and a 7 day shotgun only firearms season. Unless you hunt archery that stinks.

Well I'll stay on subject 243 or 22-250

I prefer the 22-250 to the 243 for its ability not to blow a hole through the backside of a yote. You can custom load up to a 35-70 grain bullet witch covers a huge spectrum from 35gr at 4200fps (bad wind drift) to 70gr at 3700fps (long range wind bucker).

    While the 243 I believe loads 50-110gr

My buddy hunts with a remmington 243 and it has never out performed my gun. Nor is It anywhere near as accurate.

    Just my 2cents

Son in law shoots the 22-250 while I prefer the .243. We are pretty even as far as taking yotes but the .243 bucks the wind better and reaches out farther. May not be a caliber difference as much as a weapon choice. He has a light barreled synthetic stocked Savage while I'm shooting a Savage Series 12, BVSS in .243 with a VX-II 6-18 AO. My .243 "bench rest" gun will put 3 in one hole at 100 yards all day long (zeroed at 200 yards) with 70-75 grain ballistic tip Nosler boat tails and I've taken yotes out to 400 yards fairly consistently. The .243 is a capable caliber and I bought it because it will take anything up to deer with just a change of bullets. 55 gr, 70 grn, 75 grn and 100 grain bullets all print within an inch or two of each other. On the other hand have a number of friends using .223 in various rifle configurations and all take quite a few coyotes. Call em in close and the mini 14s knock em down, glass for em and a larger caliber works better for me. Calling yotes I have had all kinds of critters show up. From hawks to mountain lions. My wounded rabbit caller appeals to all kinds of preditors. Years back used a mouth caller and had a mountain lion almost jump in my lap. Scared the shit out of both of us. Now I use a remote electronic caller set a ways away. The area I hunt has a number of cattle ranches close by so a lot of the coyotes have been shot at before and won't come in close so the .243 has been perfect for reaching out an touching them.

If you can afford to have a gun dedicated to just varmint hunting I would go with the 22-250. At 4000 ft/sec they shoot flat. A 243 is a good multi use gun. It works for both varmint and deer but doesn't excel at either. A 22-250 is just not enough for anything larger than a coyote but perfect for everything smaller. A 243 can destroy the hide. Into coyote hunting with a friend. He has a 243 and would like my 22-250. I have a 30-06 for any hunting larger than a coyote.

Also put as much money in a scope as you do the rifle. Thats what really makes a difference.

both my sisters have shot 2 deer each with my dad's 22-250...shot placement is key. We also have smaller bodied deer here in north Texas.

I watch Predator Nation and Predator Quest regularly. Fred Eichler on Predator Nation mostly uses a .223 in an AR15. Les Johnson on Predator Quest uses either a 22-250 or a 12 gauge with #4 buck shot. Both hunters have to be taken with a grain of salt since they are paid to use products from sponsors.
