I think it's part of the 2nd Gen board's initiation that you have to go to the 3rd Gen board and attempt to say something negative.

Majority of truck owners never TOW, engage 4X4 , or even go offroad, that goes for Taco owners as well.

We just don't tend to see those folks bother to look for an online forum about their trucks... unless they have an issue they're trying to sort out.

I feel that Consumer Reports has been a bit biased towards Toyota after the accelerator issues years ago, and seems to favor GM and some other brands at times without any objective reasoning. For example, just a few years ago GM came out with a redesigned vehicle, and Consumer Reports gave it excellent reviews. I believe it was the Toyota Highlander that had just been redesigned that year, but Consumer Reports stated it was too early to evaluate the Highlander since it was just redesigned. How can you rate one redesigned vehicle, and not another? In 2007, the Highlander also got their Number 1 rating, but they refused to recommend it. I am curious how they can give the 2016 Tacoma a low overall score, mostly based on poor 1 year reliability - what specifically do they define "reliability" as? Does a broken radio carry the same weight as a broken transmission? Toyota has always been the best in terms of liability, so it raises some red flags when an allegation like that is made without providing any evidence.

It is related. If a vehicle has what someone considers poor fit and finish, it isn't a stretch to think reliability will be poor as well. Toyota is probably an exception, but one generally follows the other. See any Chrysler product ever made.

You can't say with a straight face the gen 3 roll out has been smooth. 1st year reliability has been pretty atrocious for the Gen 3. Your Gen 3 may be running perfect (and I hope it is) but a lot of people have been having issues with their third gen. I imagine 30 years ago the amount of issues we are seeing now would seem very low but today's cars have higher standards in terms of QDR.

At first, it seemed like there were a lot if whiners on this forum, and I chocked it up to "people with problems join forums". Then I jumped on the Colorado forum to see what people were saying about the diesel, and it seems like there are way more complaints from Taco owners, then Colorado owners. Maybe the Tacoma has a bigger following, thus more members on this forum, who knows. I still think the Tacoma is a great truck, but it seems like it was a rough start on the 3rd gen. GM seemed to introduce a brand new truck, with a new diesel, with less issues than Toyota with a re-design.

Yeah I think Toyota will get it figured out but I think a lot of people on this forum cannot see through their fanboy goggles. I love Toyota and I love my Toyota but I will certainly admit it has it's downsides too.

I've filled out Consumer Reports surveys myself and I'm completely honest when I do.

That being said sure I rated the transmission as awful just like most other people that did the same survey.

Now granted I don't have howling control arms, vibrating brakes, rear end differential problems, windshield cracks, leaking 3rd brake lights or a host of other issues with my truck, thank you Jesus, but plenty of others do have these real issues and pointed them out on their CR surveys hence the low reliability and satisfaction ratings.

I bought my Toyota because of their reputation for reliability and I hope to have my truck for many years.

Those reports can be misleading. You said you rated the transmission as awful. While it's annoying, it does not mean it has a reliability or longevity problem, but that will drop the reliability ratings. A few years, back ford dropped to the bottom in the JD Power ratings, because people were annoyed with the SYNC software. They weren't breaking down any more than in the past, people just hated the SYNC. Once they made the SYNC more user friendly, they went back up the reliability ratings. It's all subjective.

That's true, I think when you get the host of other issues thrown it it bleeds over to non-reliable somewhat.

As an owner, I don't like hearing this from CR.

In all honesty, I have had more annoyances with this truck than with any of my other cars by 16K miles. Even a first-year BMW, first-year Porsche, and first-year Mazda didn't give me any grief.

In my case the actual mechanical issues are the howling rear diff and something that sounds like a front bearing working its way toward failure (neither resolved yet). Annoyances have included vibrations in the steering wheel at 2000-2100 RPM, engine "stumbling" under part throttle at low RPM, an auto that was released while only 80% through the programming/testing phase (TSB applied but still needs work), and a brake booster that makes it uncommonly challenging to stop smoothly.

Minor issues include the whistling LCA holes and vibrating hood.

Luckily nothing is fatal here. Just annoyances.

People on both extremes of the experience scale make the majority of posts. You can't base your opinion of reliability on an internet forum (ESPECIALY TACOMAWORLD ;) ).

If you have any sort of lift or leveling kit on your truck that needle bearing (if not changed to a solid bearing) will fail. This is the same needle bearing in the Gen 2s. I know my local dealer puts in solid bearings when they lift or level tacomas now.

For the vibrations on the steering wheel, that could be your tires needing rebalanced.

I have had both of these problems on my gen 2. Annoying but fixable. And partly why I have not wanted to lift or level my Gen 3 :( the dealer likes to void warranties if it's an after market lift. Pain in the ass.
