You have done the deckplate mod without the deckplate. In previous generations there would be those that would swear you gained 2hp while creating an annoying hiss.

The real question is how in the world did you manage to crack it?

I bought the truck 3 months ago and didn’t notice it. My guess is a tech or prior owner trying to force it closed when it wasn’t set properly.

It should be a lot quieter once you get the box sealed up.

    This…

Or find a take off from someone who installed an aftermarket intake. Check the BST threads

Salvage yard here only pulls them as the complete box and they want $350.

I think I will be epoxying it at that price. Especially since it wouldn’t hurt the engine if I just left it that way since the air is still going through the filter.

Thought that was only to sell? Or did they change it and hide the section to anyone under 50?

I'd just push it out from the inside so it's flush then use some silicone to seal it. Simple, inexpensive and not rocket surgery.

I've run across this quite a few times dealing with 3 rd gen 4Runners. Boxes are made of plastic. Some are old and brittle. It's very common for someone, not knowing any better, to lean on it to gain leverage for something else in the engine bay. Snap! It's far too easy to do and worse on older vehicles.

If you chose to replace the air box, do it sooner than later. The bolts thread through the inner fender wheel well, so they're exposed to road grime and get rusty with time.

AFAIK, there are a few sections of the site that can not be accessed if you have less than 50 posts. Bst/ green room/ dumbgen and a few others that I can't name off the top of my head.

Seal it from the inside and you will probably never notice the crack at all. 10 dollar fix.

    Thanks for all the responses.

I went ahead and applied the JB weld epoxy tonight. If it bothers me later I will think about replacing the box, but even if I don’t get it sealed perfectly it is before the filter, so at least I know the air is still being filtered.

That was the easier project. This spring I will be attempting to fix the timing cover seep with permatex.
