JDM imported engines 'can' be a decent option as well. They are a dime a dozen and cheap, but require a lot more parts to be swapped over from your old motor. They also clean them up very well before selling them, making them look so much more appealing than a dirty engine pulled from a wreck. The main problem with them is that the mileage is unverifiable. The sellers say that due to Japanese emissions laws these engines are pulled and shipped to the US between 60-80k miles, but there's no way of knowing whether or not that's actually true. They could stamp a sticker that says 75k on an engine that actually has 200k.

Also don't forget to consider all the general maintenance you would want to do to an unknown used engine before you throw it in. They're all 20-30 years old and likely need new gaskets, seals, hoses, and timing belt, among many other little things. Those things really add up, and by the end of it you start getting really close to the cost of a fresh remanufactured or rebuilt long block. Of course rebuilt's will have many secondary items that will add up too, but just something you should think about now before spending any money.

You know the maintenance history of your block, that was why I chose to keep my block. Do a cylinder leak down test to check the health of your piston rings. If your rings are good and compression is low from valves/head leaks, new heads would be cheaper and restore the lost compression.
