First rock that hit the windshield caused a crack that spread across it in less than 24 hours. Bad luck or are the original windshields particularly fragile? Just curious if this is common. Truck has less than 800 miles on it.

The windshield in these seem to crack really easily...mine cracked from a rock that didn't even hit that hard

oh boy hope its not like my old 96 hyundai elantra that i had when it first came out... 28 miles cracked windshield and then at 275 miles again and then again at 700ish and then never had it happen again... cross fingers it gets fixed aftermarket side...

90% if the time you crack a windshield it's because you are following vehicle in front of you too closely. Create more of a buffer. I've been a licensed drive for 17 years and not one cracked windshield.

Spreading has more variables behind it than glass quality.

My 2013 got a rock chip on the way to work once, and literally 5 minutes later it had spread 70% horizontally and had a crack that vertically spanned the windshield.

Got it replaced, of course - and haven't had any issues with other rock hits.

That said, Scion (Toyota) had an issue with the first gen xB because the angle of the windshield was too vertical and made rocks strike the windshield like crazy instead of deflect off the glass. Wasn't more than a few years IIRC before there was a lawsuit that reimbursed owners for windshield replacements due to the design flaw. So, that issue does happen and Toyota has been victim to it before.

Rocks can be thrown pretty far, and they can be thrown and bounced on the roadway.

Distance helps but your make believe percentages and reasons why are wholly inaccurate.

To add to this, the replacement windshield is a USA made aftermarket piece that I paid $450 for - not covered by insurance.

You need to drive on the roads in New York. Rocks and pebbles getting flung from the other side of the road over here. It's like a war zone!

Depends where you live and the condition of the roads. I've seen some rocks fly up from far away and hit the windshield. I'm super paranoid and never follow anyone closely, but around these parts that doesn't matter too much as the use gravel on the roads in the winter. I've replaced the windshield in my Lexus twice. The angle of the glass plays a factor as well with trucks generally taking more of a beating.

Not much worse than an FJ Cruiser from Toyota's line up though.

My insurance will cover it minus the $100 deductible. Safelite will supposedly guarantee the replacement for life. FWIW I've been driving for 36 years and this is only the second windshield I've had to replace. There are limits on how much space you can put between yourself and the car in front of you before other cars zip around you and fill in the gap.

    Don't worry about traffic gap.

It's an overblown reason. Rocks are the real issue. ;)

I am on my 3rd Tacoma and got forced into helping gf move (had truck 1 month). Windshield got hit by a rock and left a nice circle in the windshield on the way there. Got scraped down the back quarter panel going through the gate at her new place that afternoon.

    We are no longer together-

Had my first windshield nicks and paint dings from rocks driving on I95 near some road work the 3rd day after purchasing my 16 Tacoma.

In MA there is no deductible on glass, so as long as you have comprehensive coverage the windshield costs you nothing.

Not sure if any other states have that requirement.

*Guaranteed against manufacturer and installation defects, not chips and cracks from everyday use. Don't expect them to replace it for free when you get another chip.

I replaced two on my old Camry and I'm on my second, almost third for the Tacoma. I've never had windshield issues with any other brand of vehicle like I've had with Toyota.

Not true at all. Both cracked windshields I've had came when I was (on the very rare occasion) driving in the slow lane and actually well behind the guy in front of me. At 120km/h or 100km/h you're not going to see a stone quick enough to avoid it.
