So a rock chip developed into a crack before I could get it filled. These windshields are garbage. This is my 3rd rock chip!

Anyways it’s going to need replacement and my insurance deductible is $500. Anyone else replace their windshield and where did you go? Is safe lite good at entire windows or should I go to the dealer. Also what options are there for windows the OEM one seems like complete crap to me only 55k miles and it’s all pitted and has had 3 chips so far. So if I’m out $500 I don’t want the same junk.

I think safelite uses their own aftermarket brand of windshield, though I could be wrong. I am an insurance adjuster and I have heard that they do. I think with as new as these trucks are you may have a hard time finding a bunch of different options to choose from.

Just a quick tip, lower your comprehensive deductible to $50 or $100. There is little to no change in the premium you will owe each month and its so much easier to swallow when you have to put a claim in.

SafeLite replaced a windshield on another vehicle of mine a couple of years ago and they did a super job.

IIRC, it was about $425.00 with tax.

All of our vehicles have full glass coverage, no deductible. The Taco portion is $31.36 per six months. That's ~$0.17 per day. My wife gets new glass about three or four times per year in her car (lots of miles).

Dealership will typically sub it out to somebody like Safe Lite anyway.

Pilkington is the original equipment manufacturer for Toyota. They make great stuff and they have for years. Mine was cracked and I replaced it with that and it's been great ever since

SafeLite uses inferior glass in my opinion. I can see wavy lines in the glass in the top right and left corners when the sun is right, and not long after replacement, permanent wiper marks show up. I don't care since it's only a matter of time until the next replacement, which is paid for by insurance.
    Still,:annoyed:

Had mine replaced just after buying it. SafeLite, and they used Fuyao glass ... which has held up pretty well. 35k miles with the new one, been hit with a few rocks, no pitting ... can't complain. I remember it being around $500-ish.

Make sure it's a reputable glass company. I had a windshield replaced on my '88 Toy P/U by some el cheapo company (recommended by insurance company). I didn't think anything of it at the time because the ins. co. waived the deductible, so it was "free". I gave the truck away after owning it for 24 years because the windshield bezel had rusted out 2/3 of the way around because the glass company did a crappy job of sealing the new windscreen. I literally could have pushed it out by hand.

My windshield cracked. I recently went with the Pilkington Toyotoa OEM glass. Paid 700 bucks for it. Three things made me spend the money (I was also quoted 350ish for aftermarket).

    1. The glass is thicker than some aftermarket glass. This is part of why the cab is quieter than older models. I like that it's quiet.

    2. The rubber rails on the side are part of the windshield and aftermarket uses inferior rails.

    3. I couldn't imagine having glass defects that affect how the world looks outside my windshield, I knew it would drive me absolutely mad.

All these problems *might* be okay if I had cheaped out. But I didn't and I have no problems. I am happy with my choice. I have forgotten about my windshield replacement until just now and I think that's the best review anyone can make about windshield replacement.

Also, I don't believe in insurance for stuff like this. I have a 1,000$ deductible and handle and minor problems myself. Making claims is how your insurance goes up. I never make a claim unless it's something really major, like 3,000+.

I have not seen a rate increase for this type of claim and my $0 deductible glass coverage compels me (ab)use it. The biggest reason I can see to avoid making a legit claim is for the fear of the "incident" appearing on a Carfax report as "accident" with no explanation. That event on page 1 will hurt. But glass doesn't show up, so claim it and move on.

EDIT: Maybe it's an AZ thing. We do eat up glass out here.
