What kind of person thinks there would be a recall on a windshield that cracked due to a rock striking it???

I live in CA, land of perfectly manicured freeways and have had rocks hit my windshield with no vehicles for hundreds of feet.

I had my last vehicle for 10 years. 10 whole years and I had a rock chip the glass exactly once.

After just 2 months with the new Taco, I'd already noticed two little glass chips. Each about 1/16th inch. Okay, an unfortunate thing to happen to a new vehicle, but it wasn't really a big deal. I took the truck in and had the spots repaired; the remaining marks were barely visible.

    Fine.

Not a month later, I already had another chip in the glass. This one was a bigger "star" shape, about 3/8 inch and starting to crack. Annoyed, I took the truck back in right away to get repaired. I didn't want the chip to spread.

To my dismay, the shop tells me the glass tech split my windshield trying to fill it.

"...this almost never happens. Only 1% of the time! What are the odds?"

    "..."

    I guess I'm just unlucky......... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Now I need to get the windshield replaced. I requested the OEM glass through my insurance, though based on my 3 months experience with this OEM glass (and ESPECIALLY now after seeing others' experiences in this thread), I'm wondering if I should get the new glass wrapped with a protection film or something.

Does anybody have any experience or suggestions with some type of glass film/wrap? I've seen products online for this (similar to paint protection), but I'm not sure if it would actually help or if it's just snake oil garbage that will have to be peeled off immediately to then repair my new windshield glass once I encounter my next rock, mosquito, snowflake, or gentle gust of wind and the thing cracks again.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

I had a 3 foot by 3 foot 3 inch thick sheet of snow and ice come off my hood at 40mph and hit the windshield. Apparantly it was a sheet of ice that gave it lift. Amazing hit. Could not believe it did not crack. No cracks at all. It is tough imo.

I think the sky is falling that's what is cracking your windshield if its not a rock doing it.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
In last 10-12 Toyota trucks ... never had a chip or a crack.

On my Ridgeline, had a hail damage crack and Safelite fixed it. I have no idea on the quality of the glass that they used since I traded the Ridgeline right after that.

    Really?
I've driven and owned vehicles for 50+ years. Lived in Alberta the whole time. There hasn't been a year where I haven't had a cracked windshield or glass chips. Especially on a highway, Deerfoot Tr or Henday Tr.
Chips will almost always turn into a crack as soon as there's a big temperature change or water hits it. They should always be checked and or filled by a reputable auto glass shop asap.

Your assertions is incorrect. Why would you instantly suggest it is from a dump truck? I had a nissan murano crack my windshield with a tiny pebble and I was at least 3-4 car lengths away.

:gossip: shhhhh. Don't let that info out.

All the 'I only buy Toyota oil filters' guys might realize they are getting the low bid stuff too. 'Cause they don't make those either.

    Okay...I'll play....
1000miles new and the smallest pebble hit my windshield this morning. The first I have heard hit and 10 minutes later I have a foot long crack.
You guy may squabble about. This is ridiculous.
I live in AZ, a state made of rock, and have had many windshields replaced but never after a single tiny pebble hit.
This after reading about guys on here cracking their windshield changing the mirror.
I am trying to love this truck and now this.

Sure, it is probably just bad luck but damn it sucks.

P.S. I just can bring myself to sell my 23year old ford ranger 4.0 4x4. (for many reasons)
It's windshield is rough to the touch it has been hit so much.

    Yes Really.

I've lived in Sask and Alberta the whole time (aside from stints in Nunavut and overseas) and 90% of my driving is on highways with a much smaller portion of that being on gravel roads.

I never said I didn't get chips, I said I never got cracks until my Tacoma.

I also said with my latest crack - that it occurred 1 hour after I got the chip while driving out to Bragg Creek. Unfortunately there are no road side chip fixers on that route.

    What is false?
The technician part not being true perhaps.
    This can happen.
    But the glass?
