Just developed a 6" crack in my front windshield on my 22 Tacoma ..15,000 miles with 10 year Extended Platinum coverage....
Will the Platinum coverage cover this?

That’s damage, not a “manufacturing flaw”.
Now, you might ask if the dealer baked glass warranty in to your sell price,,, doesn’t hurt to ask.

Maybe your comprehensive insurance includes glass breakage coverage. But I don't see how this could be viewed as a manufacturer's defect? But then again, what the hell do I know.

I wish my insurance covered windshields... in Alberta you should almost be changing your windshield yearly. We basically use gravel instead of salt in the winter

Ya but the problem is the local geniuses (Calgary) have gradually increased the size of "gravel" over the years. Streets maintained by "city" . It's basically road gravel size now. Costs them less but us more. The "contractors" for Deerfoot and Stoney use huge rock size road gravel. Idiots !! Also contributes to the insurance scam. Most other places Lethbridge and most of BC even Edmonton use more sand sized or just sand.

Subarus have a a lot of problems with spontaneous windshield breakage without having been chipped.

Always splurge on the glass repair/replacement insurance. I think It costs me $5 a year per vehicle. 100% coverage, no deductibles.

I’d like to see that policy. I pay $250 per year, per vehicle, and have a $250 deductible. AAA just forked out $2300 bucks for 2 broken windshields, a Tacoma and a Subaru. Insurance wanted me to use Safelite for $375. I chose factory glass at $1200 and $1300. Do the math

    Alaska's interior (near Fairbanks)
    Vehicle:
2023 Tacoma TRD Off Road, sort of green color
Fairbanks, Alaska is the same. Gravel is used on the roads, and to make matters worst, salt and salt brine are also used.

About car insurance coverage: yes, they cover windshield breakage, but all depends on the type of insurance coverage you have. For example, the premiums of the ones for my wife and my cars are lower, because we chose $250.00 deductible for window and shield breakage. In this case we pay up to $250.00 for replacement, and the insurance company pays for the remainder of it. But if one opts for full coverage, then one has to pay slightly higher premiums, and the insurance company pays for the windshield in full. We did get a full coverage for my wife's 2023 Tacoma, but not for the RAV4 V6, and my 2013 Tundra 5.7L TRD Off Road.

About manufacturer's warranty: they won't pay for damage caused by road debris and things like that, only for manufacturer's defects (craftsmanship or manufacturing), and similar. If you take it to a Toyota shop or dealership, they will do a very thorough visual inspection to look for anything that may have cause it to break. For example, a very small or "minuscular" chip at the point where the windshield crack started. This is the usual telling sign that an object hit the windshield and started the crack.

I have the answer to windshield damage/chips and cracks.

Platinum does not cover it...Platinum Plus does (I have Platinum not Platinum Plus)

Geico does cover it with a $50 deductible..I can pick my own window repair shop OR use Geicos Safelite option.

    Screenshot_20241215_062136_GEICO Mobile.png

If I can have it repaired at my Toyota dealership I'm going to probley have it done there...depending on how long it will take them to repair it..
Have a coworker that used Safelite about a month ago. They came out to his home replaced the windshield the same day...He was happy with their service..
I'm not sure Safelite uses OEM glass or not though.
I'll ask them if I decide to have them replace it.

Here's the question I keep asking myself.Do I want OEM glass it seems fragile to me!

Safelite will use OEM glass. You simply need to ask for it. It will cost more and if they don't have it in stock, they will need to order it.

Some of the aftermarket glass can have problems with optical distortion. I test drove a car that felt like I was wearing someone else's glasses. Many years ago some models of Pontiac had warped glass from the factory.

You should also insist on the factory rubber moulding around the windshield otherwise they will use generic off a roll and it will not look right. Gen3 Tacoma just has hard mouldings on the sides and I'm not sure but maybe they can be reused. My 04 Camry has a moulding that only listed for $18 (in 2016) and I still had to argue to use the factory one. Newer Subarus and some other cars have no moulding and look like if a rock hit the edge they would break.

I will most definitely ask for OEM glass and trim. I'll need to have front 6" tint strip replaced..so I'll be about $100 total out of pocket. It could be worse so I'm not going to complain.

My insurance pays 100% to repair chips. I had some repaired on my F150 a few years ago. Couple of years later I called about some more chips. They said too many chips to repair. I had the option of $500 for one that had FORD on it or $350 for a plain one. I paid them $350.

My Tacoma got a few small chips in it. Too many insurance claims will get you a rate increase or cancelled. I bought a repair kit and fixed the ones on the Tacoma myself. It worked great.

I’ve probably used over 50 of those kits over the last 30 years since moving to Alberta. I keep one in each vehicle at all times and have used them in random parking lots right after a chip.
