I’ve bought and sold on CL with about a 50/50 mix of smooth and stupid transactions. The best one I’ve heard was on a 1995 Civic that I bought on CL for $1,300. I needed something that got good gas mileage and wouldn’t put miles on my daily driver because I was commuting about 75 miles each way. I drove it for two years and re-listed it on CL for $1,000. The $1,000 was a good deal considering I had done water pump, timing belt, radiator, brakes, and crank pulley while I had it. It was primer black and some kid offered me $250 because he could tell it had been in a fire. It had not been in a fire. He then tells me he can do $750 but he needs to make payments because he just got fired from his job at Wendy’s. That would be a no.

My worst experience by far wasn’t CL but I was accused of being a scammer. Maybe you guys can give me a reality check if I was being unreasonable. I don’t normally sell my guns but I needed some cash to finish building another rifle so I listed the rifle online which is completely legal in my state. I was hoping to get $1,400 for it so I listed it for $1,600, which was still a decent price. Two days after listing it a guy calls on a Sunday and offers me $1,300. I told him I really wanted $1,400 and he says he can’t do that. It was a little less than I wanted but if it sold that quickly, I was willing to take it. Then he asks if I have anything else to sell which immediately tipped me that he had the money, but was being cheap. I was a little annoyed but shame on me for not negotiating better.

Then he says he lives 3 hours away and wants me to meet him half way. Yeah, okay. I don’t have anything planned for that afternoon/evening, my beater gets ~40 mpg, and it’s a nice drive. We agree to a place and time. So far so good. I get there about 15 minutes early and send him a text. He tells me he running an hour late. I was working 6 days and ~70 hours a week at the time so I had precious little free time and I was already irritated with this guy. I told him that I wasn’t willing to wait for him for $1,300 and I wanted $100 to sit in a parking lot at a gas station in the middle of nowhere for an hour and fifteen minutes to wait for him.

He immediately calls me and tells me that he’s now only 30 minutes away. That’s a neat trick considering it’s only been 5 minutes since you told me you were an hour and fifteen minutes away. He asks whether I wanted to drive all that way for $1,300 or for nothing. I told him I don’t NEED to sell the rifle and it only cost me $8 to drive there and back. He tells me I’m trying to screw him and that he won’t pay any more than $1,300. I tell him to have a safe drive home. Over the next 30 minutes he sends me probably 40 texts. He started out bargaining, asking if I’d do $40 to wait. I told him I was already on my way home. Then he says I wasted his time and gas. I told him mine was wasted as well. Then he says he has my name and phone number and he’s going to call the police. I tell him I haven’t done anything illegal and he’s welcome to call. Next I’m a scammer because I raised the price on the way to the deal. I remind him that the $100 was for me to sit for an hour and fifteen minutes. Next he hopes my (nonexistent) children are better people than I am. This goes on for a while with each text containing less logic and more personal attacks. I eventually told him I was glad I didn’t sell him the rifle because I didn’t think he had the temperament to own firearms. After that I stopped responding. He flagged my post as a scam. I re-listed and he flagged it as a scam again… 8 more times. I think he needs an anger management class or two.

I’m still not 100% sure why he wanted my rifle. I looked around and there were two others much closer to him that were $1,400.

Sorry for the huge wall of text.

It irks me to no end when people are extremely late for a meeting. I was trying to sell some wheels and tires, and I had agreed on a time and place for the guy. We were meeting at 9pm so there wouldn't be any traffic, and I gave the guy the address well in advance to plan accordingly. 20 minutes goes by and he's still not there, so I leave and get chipotle. 10 minutes later he says that he's there, and I tell him he missed his shot and to be on time next time. Kept begging me to come back, and I just ignored him. Would've made me $600, but at a certain point I don't care anymore if I make the sale. I'm not that desperate.

Why did you keep texting/talking with that turd? You had way better things to do with your time and the guy was wasting time you will never get back.

I was hoping if I explained my reasoning he would stop texting me. When it was clear that wasn't going to happen I stopped responding.

I recently had a scammer that wanted me to give him a code that was texted to me. Apparently with the code they can gain access to your CL account and use your account to spam people. Just a heads up.

This irritates me as well. I just totally stopped meeting people "half way." Ill meet them at a grocery store here in town or something, or if they "seem" trustworthy ill just have them come to my house and i meet them in the driveway. Not really afraid if ill get robbed or whatever, always have a pistol on me, and my wife has my AK in the kitchen and knows how to use it if things were to go south.

I've never been scammed on CL. I usually can't get anyone to respond back. I've only been able to complete two transactions out of ten on CL.

Same, Facebook marketplace and a few area selling group pages seem to work for me consistently, even with big ticket items.

I have only used the email reply through CL. Most of them haven't put down contact info.
