I got a response from another dealership whose service manager believes he has the answer. Apparently toyoya just released a tech bulletin on a problem where a fuse in the fuel system does not seat properly and loses connectivity when the engine heats up and it starves the engine for fuel. He wants to set up appointment to service but wants me to touch nothing as Toyota wants to see the set up before the repair. We'll see if this is the problem. Fingers crossed but it does make sense as to why it only happens when it's hot out and I travel over 20 miles. Also makes sense as to why the problem goes away when you coast. Hope the bucking and stuttering haven't done any permanent damage to the clutch disk.

will post either way. Yep Tacoma windshields attract rocks. Changed two on my 2005 and two on my 2011. Already have a chip in the new one at 2200 miles.

Still in the shop been cooler so they swear they can't get it to malfunction. Odd does it for me every time temp is over 84 and I've driven over 20 miles on the highway. Least he's sticking with it. be over 90 today so I told him to do some hard accelerations on the freeway. should get the engine hot enough.

    Eureka!!!!
Second dealership was able to replicate the problem and recorded on scan tool. Being over 92 yesterday helped. The problem is a damaged wire in the harness to the crank shaft position sensor causing the sensor to intermittently malfunction when hot. This causes ignition malfunction, stuttering, stalling etc. Now the sucky part there are all of 5 engine wire harnesses available for this unit so it will be a few days before they can get the problem fixed. Just grateful someone took me seriously and found the problem. Apparently it can also play hell with gas mileage so maybe that will improve. I was getting 21.9 MPH in the morning cold and I was lucky to get 18.8 in the afternoon.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Hopefully this chain will help someone else with a mysterious engine malfunction.

You nailed it Tacotech72 bad harness to crank sensor. they have to change the entire engine harness.

Breakdown on the highway- Crank Case Sensor issue. I had the Master Warning light come on at 4200 miles on my 2016. Brought it in and dealer said it must be the maintenance.
Why would Toyota have a specific light just for Maintenance then a dealer determine the Master Warning light comes on instead and serves the same purpose- IT DOES NOT read on. Dealer reset light and did not plug into computer fro diagnostic at 4,200. at about 5,300 miles my truck shut down on the highway, towed to another dealer and I explained how the Master Warning light was on and was reset by another dealer.

They inspected and found the Crank Case Sensor to be failing and Toyota has developed a new part because of this issue on 2016 (so I've been told). The dealer that services this claimed these are two distinct and different lights. see below. Dealer found a boatload of data when they ran the diagnostic on the computer. I think it was the crank case position sensor that was replaced.

Maint. light is maintenance related. Master Warning light is when the you know what hits the fan. I think my breakdown could have been avoided if the 1st dealer ran a diagnostic.

Been over two weeks since the repair and everything seems to be good now. Feel sorry for anyone else that has to go through this kind of odyssey to get a brand new vehicle fixed. I was told at the time of repair the delay was due to the fact that there were only 5 engine wiring harnesses and CPS's available for the 2016 access cab. Mine didn't pop any errors until it finally died completely. Something Toyota really needs to fix as this truck could have left me stranded like RClarke.

Forgot to mention that you may want them to inspect the harness as that's what my issue was.
