    hello all,

I am working on a 09 Tacoma for a friend. it cranks but will not start. I have tried a few things to help rule out some things.

I put a NOID on two of the injectors, - Test Good
I pulled two of the plugs and I am getting spark.
There are two fuel lines coming from the tank. I disconnected both and cranked the truck, one line shoots fuel and the second does not.
Using a Maxsys scanner, there are no codes.

in an act of desperation, I shot some brake cleaner in near the TB and it did not kick over.

if anyone has any diagrams of the fuel pump, ignition, injector, ecu pinpout for testing, that would be greatly appreciated.

This is a work truck so he is losing money with it dead in my garage.

    Thanks
    Michael

    You need;

    Spark, Fuel, Air and Compression.
    You got Spark.
You should have fuel, but are you sure the injectors are firing?
Not sure how you couldn’t have Air, unless you have a major valve / timing issue.
And again, Compression you’d likely have a major issue that you would have likely found by now?

What engine are you working on?

If it does not start after spraying carb cleaning in intake you have no spark

Stupid question. Have you pulled and inspected ignition fuses #01 and #02? I’ve had similar issues with the #02 fuse looking good but having a hairline blowout in it. Spent allot of time trying to troubleshoot everything else when I should have paid more attention to the fuses from the start.

In the relm of possibilities does the engine actually turn over,? Some have said a bad flywheel...in other threads..where the starter turns but not the engine

There had been a few threads on TW about “crank but not start”. So many speculated on all the “what about this and what about that”... surprisingly enough most of them concluded with a loose battery connection. It was a surprise to me too. I would always figure if it was cranking it wasn’t battery related. Maybe this isn’t the case for you, but it wouldn’t hurt to check just in case.

When I was buying my truck from the dealership. It would crank but wouldn't start. It was a dead key

    The ECM grounds the Injectors.
So you would see power to the injectors. All time.
At least that’s the way I understand it.

Before we go that far, does the “security key” light go OFF with the key in the ignition?

If gas is “shooting out” of the fuel line.
    He probably has gas.

This is correct. The ECU provides a ground to open the injectors, power is always present when the ignition is on.

It’s a LED light that you plug in, in place of an injector. It gives you a visual of whether the ECU is firing the injectors.

    Nice, I looked them up.
Looks like a good diagnostic tool.

Anyways, that should mean the injector(s) are getting signal to fire.
So unless the 2 injectors that were test were bad, and that would be odd, there should be fuel?
At least if the fuel is making it to the injectors.

    He said there is Spark.
So now we have Air, Compression, and Exhaust.
    And possibly timing.

Still not sure if I put any “faith” in the “Brake Cleaner through the intake“ test.

Seems like there’s a lot of digging to do to get to the bottom of this one.

You need a good scan tool to check computer data. Not just a check engine light but the data.

this guy gets it. you could be chasing your tail and it could be an engine control module for example.
